Slowing becoming un-noob.
They sound damn good and extremely fun. Also, the paint job? hell yeah!

The price? Jesus. Not sure if it's worth it. But still, they sure sound fantastic.
What do you guys think? have any experience with them?

The shop I go to all the time started carrying Zvex pedals. I kept begging them to bring in the Woolly Mammoth, which they did after some prodding. I put the thing in front of an Ampeg SVT 8x10" stack and yanked it until every string on every guitar was vibrating. It was insane. I loved that pedal.

But $400.00? Damn. That's nonsense.

Also... I'm not sure if this is a national thing, I assume it is, but Guitar Center has started carrying Zvex pedals. Not all of them, just hard-ons and super hard-ons etc. Worth going down and checking them out.

Plus you can take advantage of the 30-day return policy. Next time you're recording pick a few up, lay it down, and return them a coupla days later.

Nearest guitar center to me is 2 1/2 hours. :(

But next time I'm at one, I'm definitely messing around with them. Yeah, the price is ridiculous.

30-day return policy? Well, I might have to do that sometime.

Used to have a SuperHardon...fantastic pedal. Walked off one night when I wasn't paying attention :-( Also, had a nano-head until I scored the Univalve...great little practice amp but agree, their stuff is kinda spendy.

"boutique"

I wonder if anyone who has a zvex hard-on (hehehe) would mind opening it up and giving us a close-up of what's inside? I can have my bass player approximate a schematic.

Lord help us of the Zvexers are reading this....

I had a chance to stop in at a Moog store in Montreal once, I sat in there trying every one of these pedals I could find. They're WELL worth the money. I just wish I had it, haha.

If you think the zvex stuff is cool, check out Lovekraft. My Mojodrive's not going ANYWHERE. it's everything i've wanted in an "always on" sorta pedal. seem to have a love/hate relationship with my Chupacabra, though. great lead pedal......not so much for rhythm.

And check out Menatone too. the King of the Britains is a nice JTM45 in a box (that's the chunky rhythm pedal--malcolm young to a T). Been wanting an old TBIAC for some voxy love.

for Zvex content, i'd really like to try out a seekwah....tremolo and (auto) wah together sounds like dangerous fun.

I heart spendy pedals. especially dirt boxes.

i more heart lucibox (and lucibox-styled) pedal enclosures. taking a break from working on a nice red swirly box for my BYOC shredder right at the moment, actually.

if you think your lovekraft is cool, check out a klon :D
that's the target for after the holidays :)

:D mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.............horseybox........mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

seriously, i'd love to give a centaur a whirl, but i haven't had a whole lot of need for a clean boost. then again, i haven't experienced the "magic" firsthand. i figure i might as well go ahead and get on his list and flip it if i don't like it......except he wants $$ up front. and i just wish he was still making them in the gold "horseybox" enclosure instead of the plain silver one.

yes, aesthetics matter. especially on a $400 pedal. but i'm sure as hell not going to pay ebay prices for a gold one. that's just nutty.

actually, there are some supposedly accurate "Klon klone" schematics out there, i might go ahead and build one of those first to give myself an "idea" of the klon's tone.

oh, and if you want nutty pedal prices, there was a landgraff wah on ebay for a $900 opening bid. it closed saturday (didn't sell), so you have to do a completed items search. while i love the look of the landy pedals, and i'm sure they sound great......i don't have a burning desire to pay what they're asking for an LDO.

But i WOULD like a BJF honeybee and EDGM. :D *drool*

dude-- if you find that klon clone schematic please share :)

today i found tone happiness with this rig-- sg standard with fralin pafs > z vex box of rock > randall mts rm 50 w/ a brahma channel (souped up plexi) and a blackface channel (fender). a little bit of the boost with the blackface channel yielded the best clean tone i've ever gotten and with the distortion and the neck pu i got great blues tones. the boost + the brahma channel resulted in great hard rock/early metal rhythm tones and with the distortion added in i got great lead sounds. i have a grail-modded recto channel for the randall too. that's pretty distorted and saturated itself, but adding a tiny bit of boost helps add a little bit of extra goodness for leads.

The Klon Centaur, IMHO, is nothing but a rediculously overpriced tubescreamer. I would definitely go with a Keeley TS808 before ever considering a Klon. Check out the Hermida Zendrive as well, if you want a real pedal.

go to free stompboxes dot org and do a search for the "sagittarian". :D

it's probably not a dead-on perfect "clone", but they say it gets real close and tonally is in the ballpark. for what amounts to a glorified TS clone, "in the ballpark" is fine for my intentions of "getting a taste". from there, if i want a real klon, i'll get on the waiting list and pay the asking price. i have no desire to pay stupid ebay prices for one.

but for a TS clone, my mojodrive does a real nice job.

sweet-- thanks. a good friend of mine has one from about 6-7 years ago. he paid $250 back then! they pop up used for $400 fairly often.

for ts clones, i loved the mjm blues devil. i never should have sold that one, but i'm happy with the bor.

$250 was the "new" price back then. even now, they're something like $325 new, if you get on the list. you have to pay up front. i've been watching em on ebay for a while now and i can't get a read on em. you'll see one close at $380, and then 2 hours later an identical silver one closes at $520. i don't get it.....and i don't want one bad enough to constantly watch auctions.

there's so many good pedals out there these days it's hard to pick just 4 or 5 to put on a pedalboard. ;) it's like all the variations on chocolate......is there a bad one out there? :D

i just put together a BYOC "Shredder". And it's really good! Stay tuned for a thread about it.
