Why in the hell would you leave a pair of HR-824's sitting in their box for 3 months???

That's what happens wihen you include both a 100-watt and a 150-watt amp in each speaker box :) You got 500 watts of amplification in four seperate amplifiers crammed into two little boxes.

yeah, those puppies are heavy, but man do they produce a nice stereo image. something else interesting, my friends were blown away when i played a dvd movie on my computer listening through the monitors, the sound was great.

Damn, I'll bet.

I'd love a pair of HR824's. Even if they had to be "second" monitors due to their slightly flattering sound. They just make everything sounds so...clear. And different. Maybe it's the 100W tweeter amp?

I'll tell you, 824s get trashed on this board quite a bit. It seems like either you should get a pass for only having the budget for BX5s or you should move up to wall-mounted mastering loudspeakers, but god forbid that you use anything in-between like quality nearfields that actually sound decent and provide worthy accuracy and easy translation.

I've had my 824s for 6 or 7 years now, and I absolutely love the things. When I was originally shopping, I compared them against some Yorkvilles, KRKs and Genlecs. Now, for my ears, and on a price:performance rating, there was nothing that sounded better than the 824s without having to double the budget and/or get seperate amplification.

In my room they sound fantastic to my ears, and I found them very easy to translate to the outside world. In fact translation required almost no work at all; if it sounds right at my desk, it sounds right on my stereo or in my car. I rarely check my mixes on other systems anymore, because I know what to expect. (Yeah, I still do check once in a while to make sure there is not a calibration drift.)

And Jugalo, I'm with you 100%, babe. The imaging is absolutely incredibe on these things and yes, I too listen to my DVDs on these often. My associate in Delaware, who also uses 824s, just built himself a new house this past spring (lucky bastard :) ). He is building an entertainment room in there, slowly adding the pieces together as he can afford them, and he is actually using 5 824s as the 5. part of his 5.1 system. They are, in fact, THX-rated (FWTW), and the high freq dispersion on them is wide enough to handle such a setup quite well. I can't wait to hear it when he's done; he'll have 1250 watts of deca-amped loudspeaker for the five full channels (he hadn't decided on a specific sub yet the last time we talked about it, but that will add to the mix as well.)

Are 824s for everybody? Of course not! Many folks here seem to have actively used them and just don't like them. That's perfectly normal. But many folks just don't like the Mackie name, and that - while I somewhat understand the roots of it - is unfortunate because the speakers are no where near deserving the general thrashing they get on this board.

I love mine, even though I get dissed a lot because I don't have Adams, Genelecs, or high-end Dynaudios.

The work well for me.

Hahaha

I actually had the krk v4's and v8 and fell in love them though their a lil mid harsh. My old experiences with 824's were that they sounded to damn good. But now i have my own i will learn them and make the best of them sh*t im not complaining i didnt pay for em they were a gift.

Ha Ha, that sux. :p You got emoticonned.

BTW: My Dynaudio BM6A's will be hear Tuesday. I rool ewe.
DOH! What that was supposed to be was a ":" seperating the words price and performance to indicate "price performance ratio". The forum software interepreted the ":" followed immediatey by the "p" as an emoticon because it didn't check context (and I didn't re-read my post after posting.) I'll leave it there just for fun. :)

Anyway, I used to sell consumer and pro audio gear One Upon A Time, and one thing that hit me very early on is that everybody has different tastes when it comes to loudspeakers. What one person thinks sounds great, or smooth, or whatever other adjective one uses, the next guy will hate the sound of, and vice versa. This is even true - though to a different and/or lesser extent - with trained, pro ears.

The part I haven't figured out is how all of us with different ears still manage to recognize good sounds from bad on other recordings. Somehow it all works, though. Thank god for that. :)
