Just got two new MXL V93M microphones. Set them up in their shock mounts on a stand (hoping to use them as an ortf pair) They seemed to be working OK. Adjusted the stand height. Now one is full of loud staticy popping noises. Is this mic damaged? Was it damaged just by adjust the stand height?

It's best to let condenser mic's warm up with the phantom power on for a while so you don't get cracking and poping sounds. If you already let them warm up and either of them is still cracking and or poping... you may have moister in it... if that is the case turn the gain down and the phantom power off... then unplug the mic and put it under a 100 watt light bulb for about 6 hours or so to dry it out. Put the 100 watt light bulb about 3-4 inches above the mic.

Thanks, I tried it but it did not work. Now that I listen to it some more it sounds almost like there are sudden gusts of wind noise even though there is none.

It was a good thing that I had bought two. Otherwise I might have presumed the mic was that way normally.

Musicians' Friend was good on the phone, quickly agreed that it was most likely a bad mic and not something that I did. (Being able to say that I had compared it to the other identical mic no doubt helped, as did the fact that I was calling within hours of their arriving here.)

I ran into this exact same problem on a two different V67's and an MXL 603. Sounds like a distant surf surge, and the odd spike now and again. I sent one back for repair, worked for awhile but still does it occasionally. I've since switched back to Rode products. Better QA.

Good luck though!

I've also had problems with noise from my behringer b-1 which I bought recently. It sounds almost like leaves rustling in the wind.
I've tried to get answers from several forums and from behringer
support, but with failure. I think I'll better send it back, and, if possible, pay a little more for another mic. Dunno..

Simon,

yah send it back. Get yourself a V67 instead of the B1 :).

I've got two Marshall MXLV67G's, two MXL990's and eight MXL603S's and I've never had any noise problems with any of them.

I wasn't meaning to infer bad quality or anything. Even the best products can have one get damaged out of the factory In fact I noticed that the mic tends to sound fine for about five minutes so it is easy to see how it could have gotten out of the factory.

Still as my first LD condesnser if I did not get two of them I might have spent a long time saying 'damn these are sensitive to air movement'
