I think-

use multi, if you want that synth to play back on different channels at the same time

use poly, if you want the synth to just playback on one specific channel

if you are daisy chaining, I don't think it matters which synth is first, but let's say you choose the proteus 2000. Attach a MIDI cable from it's THRU to the IN of the next module. Attach a MIDI cable from the THRU of that module to the IN of the next module, etc.

With four modules, you might want to invest in a MIDI patchbay. The MIDI timing can be superior (less compromised) compared to daisy chaining and it makes routing easier. I use an Edirol UM-880 myself. MOTU and M-Audio make some good ones too.
