Hey dachay2tnr,
I got a question...if the mackie 1604VLZ Pro has 16 inputs how come it only has 8 direct outs? how do you output the remaining 8? hehe sorry if i sound really really dumb but i am a complete newbie...
and also, on each input channel, what is the difference between the insert and the line (it says bal / unbal next to the line one) jacks?
oh would you or anybody have any good sites that i can learn about all this stuff from?
thanks a lot! :)

I strongly suggest this site. I personally found the search key to be particularly helpful from time to time. ;)

Ripman -

You'll have to ask Mackie that question. They only put direct outs on the first 8 channels. However, I believe all the channels have channel inserts, which can used as a direct out - the main difference is that the channel inserts are not balanced. Unbalanced lines are susceptible to picking up noise, particularly if the cable runs are long.

You will have other choices for outputs as well, including the busses and mains. But the bottom line is that you probably won't have a soundcard with more than 8 inputs - so what's the difference??

You can download the operating manual for the 1604 from here http://www.mackie.com/TechSupport/Tech_Library/Owners_Manuals/1604VLZPRO_OM.asp Why don't you take a look at it. Mixers, however, can be fairly complicated animals, and you probably won't start understanding a lot of it until you have a real one to play with.
