Some years ago, when I was looking into computer music before I went to the dark side (ie digital 
), one of the episodes that got me to seriously consider the digital realm was hearing the double bass sampled onto a free CD that either 'Sound on sound' or 'Computer music' gave away with the one copy that I happened to buy. It was a true revelation to me, like the player was next to me in the room. I thought all virtual instruments would be of that quality so I didn't check out the name as I wasn't yet decided.
Big mistake !
When I did eventually decide to go that way, all the double basses I had on software were most disappointing. They sounded like they were recorded in butter, all of them.
If there are any of you out there that use virtual instruments/samples (I can never tell what the difference is ! But I use both and they appear the same to me) and you're looking for a good double/acoustic/stand up/contra bass (all the same instrument), then check out "Danny Thompson double bass" at Loopmasters. com.
It's an excellent set that loads easilly into virtual samplers and the like. These are real samples that Danny has recorded. They are authentic. And they're royalty free.
