is the dm5 just an upgrade from the d4? or is it completely different, and if so, which one is better. Im looking to eventually make an electronic drumset for my studio, and was wondering which would be a better choice, especially on metal songs.

I had the D4 and it was nothing more than a bank of SR-16 samples.

Then you missed whats on the back. It has 12 trigger inputs and acts as a trigger-to-midi interface.

Why would you want to trigger crappy sounds?

I don't know, you tell me... personally I've never tried that.

Through the midi out, you could trigger any drumsound in the world with a sampler, be it hardware or software.

Ok, so we are back to the "Why buy an bank of crappy SR-16 sounds?".

I think Stefan is commenting on the DM4s usefulness as a trigger unit. I do believe that Scrubucket is looking for info on the sounds built in.

If you're not able to read, yes, then you're back at the beginning. But I did point out that in isn't just a bunch of crappy sounds. It can be used as a 12-channel trigger-to-midi interface.

I really don't know how to explain my point much easier... just read my above posts again again and maybe somehow you'll get it.

I own both the d4 and the dm5. I use them both on the same set simultaneously. I know the dm5 has alot more percussion settings if you're into that but I do not honestly hear the sound difference in basics like the large room kit...and the basics drums...snares, toms...aren't discernible form machine to machine.....it may very well be different but like i said I honestly don't hear it.

I own the DM Pro kit. I would imagine the DM5 is something between D4 and DM Pro. Sounds and samples may be the same through all three brains, processing as well, but the tweakability of each sample sound, parameter adjustment, combination of different samples to create your own snare or cymbals or whatever, is quite extensive on the DM Pro...more than I actually use, but I do use some. I would imagine by what I have read that the DM5 is somewhat like this, perhaps less detailed on the parameters that can be edited and the level of editing detail in general.

Scrubucket, if you're wondering what kind of sounds I get out of the DM Pro to tape, likely similar to what you could expect to get out of D4 or DM5, go to soundclick.com and search Dale O'Brien. When you pull up my page, download and play "Wild-Eyed Jim's". There are other songs on my site from a previous band of mine on there too...THESE DO NOT USE THE ALESIS, only Wild-Eyed Jim's. I think I got a rather believable sound out of the thing. Anyway, it will give you a rough idea of what you can expect from an Alesis-controlled electronic kit.
