i have a 16" z custom that has about an inch and a half crack in it right in the middle of the cymbal (funny seems they always crack in the middle). i was going to drill a hole at either end of the crack to keep it from spreading but what i want to know is if i do that, would it also be wise to take a dremel or something of the sort and widen the crack just a touch so that when the cymbal is hit, the edges of the crack dont vibrate against eachother thus possibly making the crack spread? or should i just drill and be done with it. thanks guys.

the kid

how old is the cymbal? i believe zildjian still has their year return policy.

I don't have experience drilling out cracks in the middle of cymbals, it's only happened once, and I just let it go and then stopped using the cymbal.

As for the dremel part, since the cymbal is almost toast anyhow, you're not really hurting anything by trying. You'll definitely lose some tone on the cymbal though since the vibrations of the cymbal in the part of the crack will just stop.

good luck!

do u mean you have a hole at the end of the bell where the taper starts? or a hole right at the cymbol stand goes through? well it depends where the hole is. if you have it near the cymbol stand hole...DONT drill it....anywhere's else it can help drilling a hole and widening the hole can help too...BUT if you use a dremel tool make sure u fine down the edges wil a file or soemthing...cause ur sticks will break very quickly if u dont. Doing these cuts WILL AFFECT THE SOUND...and make the cymbol alot trashier sounding. So TRY and by another cymbol...or get a refund lol!

Also if you seem to be breaking your cymbals alot...it might be too tight...so try losening your cymbol nut alot! Also adjust the way the cymbols are angled and HOW you hit them!

well, i dont have a picture right now but i could maybe post one tomorrow. the crack is "in the middle of the cymbal" - meaning it is between the bell and the edge. like i say i will try and get a picture up by tomorrow.

EDIT: the cymbal is well over a year old, i got it used from another drummer for 15 bucks. lol.

Yeah, I've had to drill cymbals before. It's usually a temporary soloution. All the times I've done it the crack worked through the hole or around it. You'll buy yourself some time if you need to scrap tgether cash for a new one though.

I used some epoxy on a cymbal groove crack once. You let it set up and then bake it in the oven.

It doesn't completely restore the cymbal, but it makes it almost usable.

Epoxy is too weak...ive seen people weld them but it just wont work...If its on the bell u might as well just buy a new one... and hey besides if you bought if for 15$...try and get another one from someone used?
