Does anyone know if there's any good reason to leave CWPA9 installed before I upgrade to Sonar? I talked to cakewalk tech. support and they said I didn't need it but they recommended it. That's why I couldn't get drag and drop drummer to work right. You need to have the CWPA9 disc in to use it. If need be I'll reinstall CWPA9 and reinstall Sonar again. What do you think?

I removed my CW PA9 when I installed Sonar, and haven't found any reason yet to reinstall it. (Never used drag n drop drummer though.)

I did leave FX3 installed from PA9 (it doesn't come with Sonar), but in all honesty, I don't use it. I prefer the FxReverb, or some 3rd party reverbs. PA9 deluxe for my money was a real waste, which is why I stayed away from Sonar XL. Bunch of useless toys as best I can see. But that's another thread.

Yeah, if you had Cakewalk Pro Audio installed beforehand and Drag and Drop Drummer too, then it would be picked up by the SONAR installation and put in the Tools menu.

But once SONAR is installed, there's no compelling reason to leave Pro Audio 9 installed.

And there's no reason to install Cakewalk Pro Audio again just to get Drag and Drop Drummer. Just pop in the CD-ROM and choose "Drag and Drop Drummer" from the CD autorun menu...

Don't install Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 when SONAR is already installed or you might be asking for trouble.

Thanks guys, that's what I was hoping you'ld say. Be in Sonar land soon. Are you using win 98se or xp? Wanted to know how the wmd drivers were, or do you use something else?

i've had great luck with Win2000... i imagine WinXP is just as good. i don't think you can even use WDM drivers in 98. maybe with ME....

i HIGHLY recommend upgrading your OS to 2000 or XP to use WDM. the difference is staggering.

Echo redheadboy, win 98 will not support WDM drivers which improve latency for DXi and soundfonts. Reading all the reviews in the specialist music techno press, XP is the way to go. Win 2000 is the last breath of win NT for m/soft. Best of luck!

I quess that mean's I'm out another $189 bucks. Quess I can't take it with me when I go though. XP here I come....

Paul881,

Win98SE does support WDM but apparently it's not the easiest thing in the world to get it to actually work.

Flash,

I run SONAR under Win98 SE, but I don't use the WDM drivers. The M Audio Delta drivers seemed to be buggy for a long time, and they are actively avoiding even the hint that one can use them under 98SE. I'm waiting on at least Service Pack 1 for XP before I even think about updating.

Another reason to have CWP9 still there when you install Sonar is to keep your Frauenhofer mp3 codec. Sonar for some reason doesn't include it.

Licensing issues with the owner of the MP3 encoder. Sonic Foundry has the same thing going on...

Oh man, it's getting late here. I was telling my girl, just wait the guys from cal. haven't even got on yet..... good to hear from ya all. So now I'm understandin' I should have left CWPA9 on?

Not correct. If you own the .mp3 encoder from PA9 you are fully licensed to use it in Sonar.

In fact, there is a section on the Sonar disk for installing the .mp3 encoder. When you select this option, it will ask you where you got the encoder (CW PA9 or purchased as a download). If you select PA9 it will ask to see the PA9 disk.

After that you're good to go. There is no need for PA9 to be installed on your computer.
