Can someone tell me exactly why Instrument Definitions even exist in Cakewalk? I hooked up a Korg 01/W (MIDI Out) to my computer (MIDI In), imported the Korg 01/W Instrument Definitions Bank into my project; & played. My Sound Module (Roland JV-1010) played it's own version of the Korg sounds. I tried Sysx dumps...I tried everything (I think.) My question is, if Instrument Definitions from one manufaturer won't play on a sound module from another manufacturer, what's the freakin' point? What exactly is their purpose? Thanks.

Instrument Definitions won't change internal sounds of your module. It just a file being imported into Cakewalk, assign into specific port that hooked into same specific instrument, so you'll see the patch/program's name of the instrumen within Cakewalk, instead of number 0..127. That's it. the purpose ? like this...
Let's assume you have KORG O1/W hooked on port 1 and Korg O5R/W sound module on port 2. Import their definitions from korg.ins file into Cakewalk. Assign 'em into port 1 and 2. When you want to look for sound "String" in Bank A, you'll see it in the track's programs name list. Dumping the sys ex. won't do this. It dump the internal setting of your keyboard/synth/module setting (such like programs, combi & global setting) into Cakewalk. You can save the sys data into files, and sent back to the synth latter when you mess around with the synth's setting...
