CWPA9.02 Doesn't Like Tascam US122?

Hi everyone. I just found this forum and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I posted also in The Tascam users forum, but got no responses. I've searched through here and you folks seem much more active, and very knowledgeable. No offense intended to the Tascamers.

I'm running windows 98 first edition on a 400mhz celeron, 256 megs. I have been using Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 for about a year, plugging directly into my cheapo stock soundcard line in. Everything has been working flawlessly.

I just bought a Tascam US122. It installed fine, runs fine, routing all my sound through it. With the included Cubasis software I can record no problem, but I want to use my Pro Audio 9. Every time I try to open Pro Audio I get a blue screen with the error message "A fatal exception 06 has occurred at 0028:00000017. The current application will be terminated." I hit any key to take me back to windows and then if I try to open Pro Audio again, nothing happens. It won't open, no error messages, nothing. If I unplug the US122 and reboot my computer, then I can open and work in Pro Audio, no problems. Then if I plug the US122 back in and attempt to switch my inputs in Pro Audio to that I get a message saying I need to exit and restart the program for the changes to take effect. I exit and when I try to restart, back to the blue screen again with the same error message.

Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Pro Audio 9 is, shall we say, "obsolete" technology. It doesn't use of newer WDM or ASIO drivers which are more efficient than the MME technology used in the past.

Hardware like the US122 depends on ASIO and WDM drivers to deliver its best performance and guarante trouble free operation for the most part. This explains why Cubasis is working well (it uses ASIO drivers).

My personal opinion is that your US122 is going to waste with your outdated system and to some extent, I'm sure your system probably is not what Tascam had in mind when designing the interface which is leading to the issues you are experiencing.

Rather than waste time and money trying to get to the root of your problem, I suggest you start investing in a new system and software which will make full use of the 122's capabilities.

Cakewalk's Home Studio 2 blows PA9 out of the water in terms of capabilities. It is based on Sonar 2.2 and costs less than $99. It makes use of both WDM and ASIO drivers. The downside is that I would not attempt to run it on your system - you need more horsepower.

Yup. Time to get a new 'puter. I'm using a Duron 750MHz I GB RAM XP Pro system with my US122 and I feel like I'm pushing it.

Thanks for the responses. I am planning on running this computer into the ground though, because it really does run flawlessly. Completely stable (until the US122 debacle) and it does everything I need it to right now. Which is also the reason I haven't upgraded cakewalk, PA9 just works perfect with my system.

I've (sort of) solved the problem. I went to control panel-settings-multimedia and designated the us122 as the "only" playback & recording device. Now cwpa9 recognizes and accepts it, while it is running. I still get the blue screen if I try to open cakewalk with the us122 plugged in, everytime I want to open it I just have to unplug from the usb port, then after cakewalk loads I plug back in and everything works perfect.

I'd still like to find a way around this. Has anyone else ran the us122 on win 98 FIRST edition? I know it is not reccomended. Wondering if upgrading to second edition would solve the prob? But I can live with this if I have to.
