CWPA 9 fader automation??

OK...I'm getting frustrated here. I'm trying to record and mix a track with .wav and midi data in CWPA 9, and just when I have the console faders at the right level for the mix, they move on me!

I haven't recorded any fader automation, and don't even have the "update faders" button down. I keep getting a "console automation" track and deleting it, seemingly to no avail.

In a related issue, I can't seem to get CW to write my final fader setting to a .bun file once I've got a good mix. Every time I call up the file, everything's set at 0db.

Any ideas?

have you tried the Snapshot? Go to the beginning, set your faders, and use the snapshot (camera button). Seems to work for me.

Cakewalk faders seem to have a mind of their own, don't they?

That's why I only use the volume envelopes, they're so much easier to work with.

Cakewalk Faders

As Tekker said, Cakewalk faders seem to have a mind of their own. To counter this problem, I would used one of those hardware midi controllers like Phat Boy (by Keyfax). It's a great investment for those who want to control midi devices using knobs instead of playing with virtual faders. Also works great on SBLive if you use soundfonts.

BTW, you're quite a singer/songwriter. I heard your stuff @mp3.com

Mmmm...Phatboy...

I have a software version of the phatboy that I use mostly for filter sweeps and the like within Cakewalk, but a real live one would be nice, too. I'll have to look into that, especially since I work almost exclusively w/soundfonts....

Oh, and thanks for listening, HarvardShark!

success

for some unknown reason I have been having great success with the cakewald automation.....lately.....if you continue to get mysterious changes you can run the CAL program to remove them or rerecord over them. Make sure that none of the buttons on the console panel that control automation are on...also when you want to hear automation always make sure to turn on the update function...incidentally I am talking about audio tracks not midi .....never tried it there.....does anyone know how to get rid of individual track automation?????................phat boy seems like an extreme solution $$$wise.

I usually end up going into Event edit and getting rid of anything that reads "track volume," and that works OK, but it's a little time-consuming.

What's the name of that CAL script?

Heya.
I use Cakewalk 8.04 and have noticed these weird fader moves as well. Here a couple of tricks I've noticed can help.
The faders seem to "stick" when you go to the beginning of the track. I try to keep a pen and paper handy and so when I'm mixing and I find a fader level I like, I jot it down, head to the beginning of the track, and if the faders have returned to 0 db I just reset them. Seems to work.
But more importantly, you're better off pugging in volume and pan numbers in the track view than using the faders. Sometimes the dialogue between the console view and the track view can be fragmented, but it appears that the console view is secondary to the track view.
Also, to get rid of individual track automation, right click on the fader or knob in question, hit "edit automation data" and edit by using the tools in the controllers view (ie - the eraser tool).
good luck,
steve

Like I said before, volume envelopes are much easier and more precise (although not as fun as the Phatboy ;)) and you can make minor changes very quickly and easily. Plus you can see it visually up against the waveform so you can level out louder or quieter passages a lot easier.

Just my 1 cent again (which I believe would actually make 2 cents now :)).

Hi a_street,

To keep the values from changing when you rewind to the beginning of a project, make sure all the volume and pan parameters in the track view are set to null (-1). If you want to store a certain set of parameters at a certain time in a project, use the Snap Shot feature. For continously changing values, use record automation. Also be sure the Update button at the top of the Console View is turned off when recording automation. Then turn it back on when you're done if you want to see your controls move during playback.

Best,
Scott
