I am thinking about buying Cakewalk Audio fx 1. Can anyone out there indicate whether they think this represents good value or not?

I want to use it to clean up my recordings (take out the noise of my amps), compress the audio to even out the sound levels and to stop the louder sounds distorting the whole playback at increased volumes.
 
If you can wait four weeks or so, the upgrade to Cakewalk, SONAR, includes these effects. From Cakewalk's website: "SONAR provides additional 32-bit, real-time effects. These non-automatable effects include Compressor/Gate, Expander/Gate, Limiter, Tape Saturation, Amp Simulation, Pitch Shifting, and more."
 
Here's what I can offer

Check out a company called Ultrafunk. Their Sonitis 2 Compressor plug-in got rave reviews in the last issue of Recording Magazine, and it's only $50. They also have a reverb, modulator, delay, etc., that are $50 each. I have heard the reverb and it sounds very good.
I have been usuing FX1 for a while, and it does an alright job, but should be a lot better: the metering sucks. No wait, the metering SUCKS!! The interface is not all that great, and they try to make you believe you're getting 5 great effects (wow!) when you're really only getting one: a dynamics processor. All the other effects are just the dynamics processor with some of the options removed.
I got burned uprgrading to ProSuite in November, right before the SONAR announcement, and they won't grandfather me in, so Cakewalk is not on my happy list right now anyway. I really feel their entire marketing tactic for SONAR is a bit underhanded.
I'll definitely be getting Ultrafunk myself here pretty soon, and maybe looking for a new audio program too. I'm beginning to see myself walking away from Cakewalk....

Thanks for your response guys. Hmmm... maybe I'll skip fx 1. Unfortunately, Sonar is too expensive for my budget. I've bought the Zoom gfx 707 multi-effects guitar processor today and so for guitar fx I'm well catered for (at present) but what I am looking for is a relatively inexpensive method of compression, hiss tidy up and master EQ (CW8 only gives 3 seconds of audition and you can't choose which 3 seconds, its always at the beginning of your track). How do you rate those items in CW FX1 Aaron? I'll definately check out Ultrafunk as well. Sorry to hear your tribulations with CW Pro. Seems you have been unjustly dealt with, along with a few others I suspect.
 
Another good choice is dbAudioware's stuff -- a mastering limiter, a de-esser, a dynamics processor with sidechain, and a multiband limiter (all $39 each), or all in a bundle for $99.
 
I think you are able to change the length of audition time there Paul881, do not recall precisely how to do it though.
 
BBALL is correct about audition time,
Options/global....( default is 3,)
DSound has a freebie 7 band, the DS-GE1, that is pretty nice and is even in my price range, barely.
