Taking the slow road
I was reading and they were talking abou the old days and there was the process to cut a master. What's the deal? Were they actually cutting something, like a master stamper for the record grooves?

Yes indeed. Imagine a disc that is completely smooth, ie., no grooves. The disc cutting machine had an arm similar to the tonearm on a turntable, except that the stylus was active. The audio signal was sent to this arm and would cut the grooves in the disc.

A long time ago you could even go into a department store and cut your own records with these kind of machines. I think the discs were usually acetate with an aluminum base.

so then, when the mastering engineer was altering the EQ and compression, I guess the only storable results was on the disk? or was another tape created - I bet not since it would be one more generation step that's not needed. So that's why when tapes are re-mastered, if they don't have the notes from the mastering engineer, the remaster has a different sound.

If you want to go even farther back in time, there was once no such thing as record duplication. We're talking 78's here. Artists would sit in hot cramped studios and perform the song over and over all day long. Each record was unique, because of the slight differences in each performance. Can you imagine if today's musicians had to do that?
