Ok, so I want to build a computer strictly for music. Currently im running an AMD T-Bird 1.2 gig processor, with an Abit KT7A mobo, 256megs of pc133 ram, a sblive card, and an ATI Radeon 64 meg ddr card. The cpu has a Slim SuperOrb heatsinc/fan on it right now, which is really loud, and really poor and cooling. The system is decent for gaming, and decent for making music, but its not really great for either. When I bought it a year ago, I didn?t think of customizing it for music, as I wasn?t very serious with it then. (obvious by the sblive card) I?ve worked out two choices right now, if anyone else could point out a better options, please do.
First option: is to give this one a slight upgrade by adding another 512 or 768 megs of pc133 ram, taking out the sblive and adding a Delta 44, and putting on a quieter and more efficient heatsinc/fan.
Second option: I could do a total upgrade, get a new motherboard, with an amd xp processor, a delta 44, about a gig of ddr ram and a new heatsinc/fan.
The thing is, the second option would obviously make my computer perform a lot better, with faster ram, and a faster processor. But, would the difference between a gig of ddr and a gig of pc133, and a tbird 1.2 and maybe an XP1900 really be worth if for making music? I mean, sure that would give me better 3d performance and make games run faster, but they're both fairly high performance systems, and I don't really think it would make any difference for just making music. As long as there is a delta 44 in each system, a lot of ram, and some quiet fans, having a few hundred extra megahertz and ddr instead of sdram won?t change the sound quality. Would anyone think that the difference between the first and second option would be worth it? Even for processing sounds, I doubt the little bit of extra performance would make a huge difference as far as the time it took to process, but I could be wrong. I think getting quiet fans is really important, and a quiet case, if anyone could recommend any I would be interested, I read in a post above about some Enermax cases, power supplies, and fans.
If I do the first option, I might buy another computer, with a faster processor and video card for gaming and everyday use. So you think I should just do the first option and then buy another comp for games and other things? Or do you think it would be worth it to do the second option and have that little extra speed for producing? Personally I can?t see it making a big difference, but I?m sure most of you would know better than I do, from experience, or just from reading other posts.
Thanks for any responses, and if you think I should do something else, or want to tell me what you?ve has success with, I would greatly appreciate it.
