High!,
What is the difference/advantage/disadvantage to applying compression during the recording as opposed to applying during the mix or any other part of the process for that matter? Love, Kah

The disadvantage of applying compression during tracking is that if you don't get it right, you can't undo it........... OTOH, if you're know how to use a compressor, then there's little chance of not getting it right.....

Obviously, the advantage at mixdown is flexibility.

If you have a good hardware compressor that you want to use on a lot of tracks then you have to use it while tracking or bounce the tracks through it before you mix.

One thing that's fairly popular if you're short on compressors is to GENTLY limit during recording - Just the peaks, so you might get a little "punch" going on. During mixdown, you can compress more traditionally without the artifacts you'd otherwise get from having two similar settings argue with each other.

Also if you compress to tape, you can get a hotter signal to tape.
