So if anybody out there uses Cubase or Wavelab I need some advice. Can either of these programs do multi-track recording from two seperate interfaces at the same time? So if I have one interface that's firewire and one that's USB, can either of these programs record from both devices at the same time?

If you have a Mac, it's OS can set up aggrigate (multiple) devices.

On Windows, ASIO is ONE device driver at one time.
IF the devices are from the same manufacturer and they support multiple devices on the chain it can be done.
(for example, Motu lets you chain up to 4 of their interfaces in one instance of their driver)

Otherwise, you will probably have problems or it won't work.

Another thing to consider is that unless you can clock the devices together, the individual
crystal clocks in each device beat at slightly different rates, so they will drift over time,
causing mis-matched tracks.

Best bet: Buy a bigger device with more i/o or one that supports multiple devices from
the same manufacturer and stop trying to figure out a way to get a free lunch....

ok well I was asking because I'm helping a friend build a new recording setup. I'm a live audio person so recording is different and throws me off a little bit. What we decided was we're going to get the Yamaha o1v96i audio console, and an 8 channel mic pre from steinberg. The 8 channel mic pre has ADAT out for transporting the 8 channels into the audio console. But from there, the audio console has a built in USB interface and it only transports the 12 channels from itself. So what i figured is I can use the USB out of the audio console for the first 12 tracks, and the firewire from the steinberg pre amps for the other 8 channels.

whatcha think?

and the computer we're using is going to be a mac, so how do I learn how to set it up to support multiple devices?

So do I need to clock the computer just like I have to clock the interfaces? If so, how do I do that if a computer doesn't have a word clock input?

Just follow the instructions, dude. All the info is there.

Cheers :)

Yeah I read the link after I posted that. Thanks for the help
