cubase vst32 - beginner in need!

Just wondering if anyone out there could give me some advice....I am new to this so please be patient if you're reading this.
I am using Cubase vst32. I have recently been given a mixing desk and a mic. The desk is a Eurorack UB1204-pro/UB1204fx-Pro, (Behringer).

I am having a hard time trying to link it all up. To start with it was hooked up so that I could get a dry signal in my headphones, and when recording in cubase could get a wave formation ...I could even hear it on playback!!

Just one extremely annoying thing though....It goes in dry and comes out (wet???) with reverb on it. All aux knobs are down on the desk and I have looked through cubase to see if any effects are on there but cannot find any.

The sound card in my computer is a realtek AC97. I know nothing about soundcards....

I thought it was all hooked up wrong and have been getting some advice from the recording techniques forum. so far I have the mixing desk going into the line in o the sound card via the tape outputs on the mixing desk.

Anyone got any ideas? I'd really appreciate some help.Thanx, Nassa
 
I'm not sure exactly of all the workings of that mixer, but it sounds like you just have the mixer's reverb being applied to the input channel where you have the mic. Are all of the Sends all the way down in the channel that the mic occupies? Are the master sends all the way down or off?

I'm almost positive the reverb is coming from the mixer... let me know if that does anything, and if not I'll look up the manual.

Yep, all aux knobs turned hard left, including the master aux.
 
God! Now, I goto record on cubase-go to press the 'enable' button to enable me to record something and it won't light up. Why is this happening??????
 
1st, buy the book "Cubase Power!" I can't stress how much this will help you in gaining understanding of the workings of Cubase and setting up a studio.

2nd, Where are you monitoring from? Determine where the reverb effect is coming from by isolating the sources. Seperate your mixer from your computer and listen to the mixer, then hook your mic into the card and record direct. Set cubase and the soundcard so that you can monitor while recording.

3rd, If your pushing record and it doesn't light up, you've probably got it to just arm the track. Push record again and it should start going.

BlindCowboy has it...if you don't enable the imputs you are using, it won't let you arm the track to record with.
 
Now what!!!

Thanx for your advice.

When it wouldn't light up before,(enable button), I did press it a few more times. Again, to no avail!
Somehow now, it's working again...Not sure exactly why though. This programme is just damn moody!
Now what's happening is regardless of what I record, only a straight line appears in the little audio box and only for a short time. Like the length of a loop except I don't have the loop button on.

I'm not at my studio, so I can't duplicate what your doing to tell you how to fix it. However, A straight line tells me that your not getting a signal into the system. 1st things 1st.

Let's break it down step by step button by button on the mixer.

Back panel: Main Outputs (L/R) to soundcard. Cntrl Rm outputs to monitors.

Top panel: Signal (guitar, dyn. mic) into Mic1: Lo Cut off: Gain-12:00: EQ-12:00: Aux1 & 2 hard left: Pan 12:00: 1 Mute Off: Fader 0: Solo Off

Channel 1 is set. Mute (Alt 3,4) Channels 2-8.

Stereo Aux returns/ Sends - nothing plugged in. Knobs set to hard left and solo off.

Tape In/Out - nothing plugged in.

FX Footswitch - nothing

Phones - Headphones.

Source: Tape off: Alt 3-4 ON: Main Mix off: CTRL RM. PHONES 12:00: Mode - PFL.

If you've got a condenser mic that requires Phantom, go ahead and turn the Phantom Power switch on in the back.

Channel 7/8 - Run the soundcards L/R outputs to the 7/8 L/R. Set level to +4 (button on). EQ 12:00: Aux hard left: Bal. 12:00: Mute 3/4 ON: fader down almost to the bottom.

Channel 7/8 will now handle your playback. EQ, effects, etc are pointless here, because it doesn't effect the mix. The mix is only effected by Cubase mods or the signal from Channel 1.

The soundcard, RealTek AC97 is a chipset, meaning it's most likely an integrated card. Being the the AC97 has 20/18 bit DAC/ADC conversions, you may want to upgrade to a nice audio card next..

I'll have to get back to you on the Cubase setup. My minds blanking out...

Cubase mods...? what are these?

I've set everything the way you said but I can only hear through the headphones if the solo button on channel 1 is pressed in. I get a wave formation in cubase and i can hear it all on playback - but still with reverb.


Thanks for your patience and basic instrucrion. I'm not up with all the lingo and it can get quite confusing not knowing the language others are speaking to you. I am learning tho'!!!
