Cubase VST 4.5?

How useable would this one be for me, until I'm able to either upgrade to the latest Cubase version, or maybe get a digidesign M-box? I'll have to replace my beige Power Mac G3 minitower that this was installed on, and will likely install it on the replacement, but until I replace the Mac, I'll either install it on my HP (2.6GHz P4, 1GB RAM, 5400RPM 120GB HDD, TurtleBeach/Voyetra SantaCruz, XP Pro) or my soon to be built homebrewed PC (3.4GHz P4, 1GB RAM, 7200RPM 120GB 8MB cache HDDx2, XP Pro). I'm not sure, yet, what sound card I'll put into the homebrew PC, but it'll likely be one of the M-Audio cards.

I've also got Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio, although I've yet to really play with it, but I'm just wondering if my current version of Cubase VST will be good enough to get started with.

I think it is enough for you to get started with and before you go investing into any more equipment, you should invest just your time for now and learn more about recording. It's free to learn and your recordings will benefit more from that than buying more equipment. Cubase VST is a great program, especially for learning and getting down the basics.
