Cubase v5 with Wavelab

Im using wavelab as my external editor from cubase
and at the moment using a AWE64 sound card.

When I double click in a wave twice and go to wavelab for editing, wavelab will not play the wave? so I went back into
cubase and changed the audio settings to asio multi media
and seem to fix that problem for the Wavelab anyway.
When I try to apply some effects from cubase some of them
click crackle with this Asio multimedia setting,
so I have to put it back to Asio direct X multimedia again.

This is becoming a real pain having to keep on switching these settings, and some times when I switch settings it only lets me have my samples in 22050 sample rate.

Is this just because Im using this old sound card?

Set you soundcard settings back to the way before. Under file, preferences there is check box, something like "play audio in background". Try that and see if it helps.
