Cubase LE problems

Hey, I'm a bit of a newbie to home recording so bear with me and any general advice would be most welcome.

I'm running a Dell Inspiron 530s Vista Home Premium 4GB ram Intel Core 2 - I have a PCI Firewire card to which I've attached the Alesis IO14.

I also installed Cubase 4 LE which came with the Alesis, and first of all I got loads of BSOD problems with the alesis drivers, and ended up settling for the Jan 08 version which seems to be ok.

Now, turning my attention to cubase - I've got a (seemingly) random crashing error. Out of the blue, cubase will just close without any warning signs or freezes and all I can see is my desktop. You start it again and it seems to be ok, but then another crash sometime.

I'm ultimately trying to use cubase to record my guitar, and use some plugins like Waves GTR, Studio Devil etc then later on Drumcore and Kore Player to get some decent results from my little midi keyboard (Roland PC-180).

I gather my PC is not ideal for DAW but it wasn't intended for this when I bought it.

Any advice would be seriously welcome, thanks guys.

I'm a newbie like yourself but installing LE with my Alesis IO2 I found I needed to set the IO2 as default soundcard in the control panel (ie so it runs as the main soundcard even when you aren't using cubase) to fix conflict problems with the onboard soundcard. Prodding which drivers do what under the device setup option on the device menu in cubase might help too.
