I am getting a Line6 Pod Studio UX1 to record guitar/vocals and need a cheap DAW with decent sounding drum/keyboard/bass/synth blah blah to make some kickass power metal .../ :P

These two programs seem like the best I'm going to be able to find in the $100-150 range. Could anyone give me some pros/cons of them, or direct me toward other programs in the same price range?

I don't have much experience producing, but I own a velocity sensitive keyboard and am a quick learner. ^^

Thanks in advance :)

P.S. I am obsessed with the Japanese band Galneryus and am hoping to make some covers of their songs and have similar synth sounds.

Anyone?

Surely someone on this forum has tried these programs.

Try Cockos Reaper. IMHO it beats everything out there, Ed

I have sonar 7 xl and its the shiz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My style is a mixe between haste the day, papa roach, and dry cell.......and it keeps up perfectly

Cakewalk products are amazing. I love Sonar's GUI and it was easy for me to learn. I agree with GandyDancers that Reaper is a great DAW. I use both of them. I also like Sonar because it comes with a bunch of Soft Synths. Reaper is highly flexible with VST's though. If you are just starting, Reaper would be great for you.

Never mind. Go with Sonar. It's midi stuff is really easy to use, and it sounds good. Midi is kind of hard to set up in Reaper. (I didn't read your post, just the title)

Thanks

Cool, thanks for all the info. Still waiting to get some opinions on Cubase Essential though :D

Sonar is slightly crapper for effect envelopes...not that it doesnt manage them but the workflows a pita..I use sonar studio..

So... Cubase? Anyone? My google adventure has led me nowhere thus far. Seems Sonar and Reaper are all teh rage.

Cant you download a demo of cubase? I know you can Sonar and Reaper..

to be honest they are all much the same...samplitude, studio one, xt2.5, protools, sonar, cubase, reaper...they are all pretty much the same..

I wouldnt dwell on it...just read as much as you can on actual recording techniques...these will record it for you

Cubase Rocks...

I have used cubase 5 until last month and it is phenomenal!! you can bundle it with vsti's such as "stylus RMX","virtual Guitarist","trillian" etc. and it will be tons better than sonar...though i have not used sonar much and used cubase to record few of my only own songs...i can say blindly go for cubase if you want simplicity of use and Professional audio output.

I used Sonar 6xl for a few good years. would've like to continue using sonar but i got to the point where i wanted to upgrade my computer and decided to go with a mac.... which was kinda a big deal because i put so much time in with sonar. it was my first DAW and gave me many hours of joy and frustration. but i would recommend it as a daw. using logic now and i'm very happy with it so far.
