Hi all,

I'm soon going to purchase a Powerbook g4.

I want to know if I can use the digidesign digi 002 interface with Cubase SX. I greatly appreciate your help.

Thanks,
-Mitch

as far as i know you cannot, unless Steinberg have developed support for it but i dont think they have.

Digidesign hardware can only be used with the appropriate digidesign software. In the Digi-002's case, it is Protools LE. The software is bundled with the interface when you buy it so what you get is a ready to run recording system.

Why do Digidesign do this? My guess is they tried to monopolise the digital computer recording world. As you might have heard, the Advanced Protools is considered the Industry standard for computer based recording.

I am in the middle of switching out my Cubase/PC/Echo Layla rig for a Protools/Powerbook Mac/Mbox/Digi-002R rig.

one drawback you might have is that Protools can only operate with a digidesign interface like the digi-002 connected. If there is no interface connected, the program will not boot up. Big problem if you want to take your laptop out bush (so to speak) away from power. This is why im getting an Mbox. It is a small USB powered unit that can go anywhere the powerbook can go.

It's very good to know about that.....

I am thinking very hard now about if I want to go ahead with the pro tools setup... if I do, it will definately include the Mbox.

If the mbox was NOT usb powered, it would be totally different... i mean, what would be the point of a laptop if you cant take it with you to edit your projects wherever you go...

Anyways, I wanted to ask what the reasons for your switch are?
also, how much cash was your old setup vs what your new setup is going to be?

Thanks so much for your help,
-Mitch

Actually, digidesign has developed some new drivers that'll eneble you to run cubase, logic, etc with digi002.
So in other words, yes you can!
Check out digidesigns website and you're bound to find more info on it - I'm not a PT person meself..

Hey man you definately can use the 002 with cubase. It's the core audio driver that digidesign has that will let you do that. you can also use it for things like itunes and stuff like that. Good luck.

They support Core Audio on the Mac, and on the PC, ASIO. They might support ASIO on the Mac too, but it's kinda irrelevant sicne they support Core Audio. The second poster got it backwards... Pro Tools software only runs on Pro Tools hardware, but Pro Tools hardware can run anything.

well there we go, some people are more in the loop than i am.

I study composition and production at university, at Uni they run a Protools setup so im switching over to it so i can record and edit on the run... particularly since i also work a 40hour week. Its more of a convenience thing than anything.

I'll be using the Digi-002 in my home studio, and the M-box will live in the front pocket of my laptop bag along with an SM-57 and a pair of headphones...
