I just got Cubase 5 and installed it on an old EVA Compaq computer and it seemed okay. I was trying to run guitar rig through it and wasn't able to do that, couldn't figure it out, so I'm not totally sure its okay but I guess so.

So then I tried to install it on my other machine, a newer, better one. And it seemed to install okay but when I went to run it I got a Blue Screen of Death almost immediately. It went through the first couple of startup screens, I think, then - bang, boom, gone.

This machine is a custom job - Asus A8NSLI mobo, Athlon 64 cpu, Sapphire Radeon graphics, 2 gig memory, runnng winxp sp3.

I've googled around as much as I could. Couldn't get any ideas. Nearest I got was a suggestion that I uninstall all the plugins and see if that fixes it. I guess they mean by just deleting the directories?

Any other ideas?

Did it run before you installed 3rd party plugins? If you can, save your files and reinstall the OS. Could be something is messed up with Windows.

First, change to SP2. SP3 is not suited for audio production.

Second, if your version of Guitar Rig is a crack, it is almost certainly the problem and I would recommend you delete it and buy a real version.

Third, check your third party plugins, especially the free ones, and get rid of them. Even if you aren't using them in your project they could still instigate it. Process of elimination is key.

Fourth, many times BSOD is hardware related, so try moving your ram into other slots. This sometimes helps redistribute the hardware DMA's and resolves conflicts.

Cheers :)

Nope. Guitar rig is legit. Came with a 'guitar link' piece of hardware.
I think it is my ignorance that prevents that hookup working. I just don't know how to configure either piece of software and am too dumb to follow their directions.

And, yes, there's the answer to did it work before. It works now. On that other machine.

The other problem: the machine that cubase won't work on, gives a BSOD:

That machine doesn't get the BSOD any other way. It works fine. and it runs a lot of software.

I have no third party plugins. I've assumed the reference was to all that other stuff that gets installed at the same time: HalionOne, Groove Agent, Drumsets and so on. Not so? Is all that stuff required?

I just took a look and I see its all installed in the same dir as cubase so I suppose it is integral. And there's a dir: VST Plugins. Distortion, dynamics, filter... etc... They'd all be integral, too, I guess. Though I've nothing to lose by deleting them and see what happens.

It is installed on an external drive, for space reasons. I don't suppose that would have anything to do with anything? After all, it is installed and working on an external drive on the Compaq, too.

The RAM question: There's no other problems with the machine whatever. None. I could run a ramcheck though.

Reinstalling the OS? Totally last resort. I've got so much in this machine I'd hate to have to rebuild it. More inclined to grab another disk and do another install, have a second copy of XP running. Maybe with nothing else on it but Cubase.

Revert to SP2? How do you rollback service packs? I guess I could google to find out. Very interesting, that suggestion. Anyone got any further info on that?

Must point out the Compaq is running SP3, too.

I know you've probably upgraded by now, but incase anyone else is suffering from the same problem, like I am. I find it seems to be some conflict with Cubase's on multiband compressor. Took me awhile to figure it out, but after about the 10th time of bluescreening after adjusting any settings in the multiband compressor it kind of seemed pretty obvious as to the cause, since not using their own multiband compressor, the problem hasn't happened. On that note, I was wondering if anyone else had found this problem and if there was any solution for it? Or does anyone know where I can get a half decent free/cheap 3rd party multiband compressor?
