Cubase 4 and MIDI (note) recording

I'm having issues recording MIDI notes via both a USB MIDI in and the MIDI in on my Alesis i02 (this being my preferred choice).

I'm using Cubase 4 on an XP machine, the MIDI filter in preferences is as default but, on record, all I get is a bunch of program change, aftertouch etc etc instead of notes - this happens with both my Roland V Drum kit and my Yamaha whatever keyboard.

The in and out connections appear to be fine on Device Setup->MIDI.

I'm hoping it's just some magic setting somewhere I'm overlooking.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can only think of two things that would result in this:

1. you checked this, I'm being redundant: in Cubase Preferences, in Midi Filter the "Note" box under "Record" is not checked.

2. here's a screen shot of Edit Mode:

When the icon circled in red is on, it will bring up the horizontal row that reads "Filter, Note, Controller, Pitch Bend etc...". If the Note box is checked (circled in yellow) then notes, although they are still there, will be invisible.

You might check that. It won't result in the notes not being recorded, but it will look that way.
