we don't need rest!!
I have the opportunity to resurrect an old Crown DC300a. I've used these (probably like everyone else here over 40) decades ago to blast out some rock and roll thru some JBL 4560 cabs and some 2482 horn drivers.

Realizing that the 300a is more a PA amp...right?...except in those old studios back in the 70's!

How would this work in a decent home studio setup to power the monitors. I have some old JBL4311 in primo condition, but am using a little Alesis RA150 amp. Is the Crown going to be just louder....and harsher...or noisier (I know heavier!) and/or is there something NEW but at the SAME price point as a used Crown that is actually going to work better? I kinda have fond memories...but should I just leave them as memories?

btw, I think the price on the Crown is going to be hard to pass up. If anything will make a bass rig out of it ;-)~

I don't know if I can help, but I remember ours spend a LOT of time getting repaired. May have been us, but we used a stinky old Peavey amp while the Crown was getting repaired and it never failed.:rolleyes: Now in a home stereo, I'd guess it would be ok... I guess.

Those DC series were friggin boat anchors. But, when I was lugging around racks of them, they seemed to be everybit as bulletproof as the CS800's that were powering the monitors.

Transient reponse on these were pretty good (40ms I think), as I recall and should make a decent studio monitor amp.....you might notice a slight "crispness" to the upper mids. Some do, others don't.

dont be surprised if it dusts the alesis... sure it "old technology" but in the lower power areas the new isn't necessarily better just cheaper... getting parts for it may be a bitch though... iirc there's an op-amp in the front end that's NLA and no good replacements...
