Has anyone heard Crossfade’s self titiled album? It was recorded and produced by the guys in the band.
I have two questions about it:
What do you think of how it sounds in terms of the recording?
What exactly are the differences between recording, mixing, mastering and producing?

I don't really listen to them anymore, but when I did, I would have never thought they recorded it at a home studio they built with equipment that they admitted wasn't the highest in quality. I saw an interview and they said that instead of playing show after show and then paying thousands of dollars to go into a studio where they might not even be satisfied, they'd use show money to buy pieces of equipment here and there so they could record on their own time and do it to their own satisfaction. I know there was mixing and etc done to their recordings before it sounded the way it does now, but I would have to say they did a really good job themselves, as well, because it sounds really good for something they did themselves at a home setup.

I live in SC where they are from. I have looked around in some local music stores to see if i could find anything that they mixed themselves but i have not yet found anything. I will keep looking however and maybe at somepoint i will run into someone who has the CD that they mixed on their own and i can try to get a copy.

J, are you saying that what is released is not what they mixed? I was of the impression that it was but, of course, enhanced. Then again how much could you enhance a mix.

The record company had the album re-mixed and mastered.

I've talked to some people and they say that it sounds A LOT different from the original.

Im not into the style at all but one of the radio stations in my hometown plays the hell out of those guys. I heard an interview where the band talked about recording etc....Anyhow the album on the label was remixed by a pro. It sounds ok to me but Im not really shocked that it was recorded by the band.
I've heard some stuff recorded at home and mixed by pros on another forum and the difference was night and day.

I know several bands in the area who record their own stuff and have it mixed by pro's. The lead singer of one of my favorite local bands does that and I think they turn out great. He actually has credits on just about every local bands CD that you can pick up around here.

Is there anyway I could get my hands on their stuff before the pros got to it?

I live about an hour from Columbia, SC which is where they are from. My gf lives in Columbia so im there fairly often. When i get the chance...i like to go to used music stores and look around a bit and i have looked for some of their older stuff but have not seen anything yet. If i can come across something...ill let ya know.

horrible, horrible band.

Well honestly, thats completely subjective and I take offense to pointless bashing. They are signed...and maybe while they are not the most technicly apt, they write catchy, hooky, songs that radio can sell to kids. They are making money. I think they have something going for them if you ask me. I'm also from Columbia, SC and have known their drummer for a few years. James, that is (they kicked their original drummer and the one that was on the cd out of the band). They recorded the cd at home, the drums were a triggered Pearl kit into an Alesis DM5. Yup...the drums on the cd are DM5. The guitars were POD and a mic'd Flextone II. The album WAS remixed and mastered. I know a couple people who have cd's back when they were SugarDaddy Superstar. They were known as The Nothing before that. I can try and get a hold of the old sugardaddy recordings and post them here. No one will give a shit I can promise you that. lol. If you want to hear something THEY mixed you can check it out on their myspace here:

Listen to the song called "Drunk". HUGE difference from that to the album recordings.

the kid

Actually, correction. Sorry it's been a while since I checked their myspace. They took that song down and all that remains are album cuts. Whoops. lol
