Alright guys im doing a song with a friend and i have finished the drums, cause i play the drums and he plays guitar, so i want to find out what i should do with them to make them better, i think this one sounds really good, but you guys are the judges, does it or does it not?

PS: Drums dont start for 15 seconds, its a guitar part!!!!!!!!

Maybe I should apologize in advance for any harsh words that might come up. I'm not trying to be mean, I just want to help. :)

I think it doesn't sound good. The highs sound kinda choked, the cymals have a curious zing about them (both may be microphone-related), and the snare and kick are a bit muffled (EQ might help here).

But the most distracting thing is your timing, as it is not very stable. You should work on your kick drum skills, since there are quite a lot of uncontrolled semi-hits/ghostnotes in there, that sometimes sound almost like a slapback delay, especially in the beginning.

I think performance comes first, sound comes second. So if possible, try to rerecord the drums or at least try to edit those unintended kicks out.

Joey:

I agree with Nessbass in the technical aspects of your playing.Lacks precision on a general way (BD /SD principally). You are asking how it should be better, ok? As a professional musicial, my advice : study a little more with the metronome and you will record a better drum track.

Wait good advices by the engineers (I´m not one),they certainly will help you
to have a better sound too.

Good job !

thanks for the comments guys, but i didnt really want critiquing opn my playing, cause i played a song dispatch - time served, and its all to time and stuff, and the bass drum goes crazy in that song, and on the snare i am not trying to do ghost notes, my hand is just really lazy and has gotten into a habit of just buzzing after i hit it. But i relaly want to find out how my recording came out, i am pretty new to recording, and wanted info on that.

thanks

Well, the cririques you were given on your playing have alot do with how the RECORDING will sound, so they were very relelvant.

aside from the playing, which i must say isnt all that bad, i think the drums sound pretty good. i do hear the bass drum ghost notes, and they are a bit distracting... but when u put the whole mix together they might disappear with all the other stuff happening.

it doesnt sound too bad to me except the bass drum needs some more meat to it. I like the snare sound though.

hmm...I can't comment on much except for one thing: the imaging of the drums. I can't really tell if it's the verb that you have on it, micing or the panning.

For some reason it feels like it comes around my head rather than being firmly in front of me. I does feel a bit wide for my tastes, but then again, anything goes with music production.

However I would say that depending on the genre of music, you could treat the snare accordingly. In rock, perhaps leave your top snare mic dry to get the punch and your bottom snare mic can go to an individual drum verb for you to adjust accordingly.

Just my thoughts.

sounds good playing needs to be tighter. practice with a click for sure and in a week that problem will be solved. it really sounds good though. Is that an expensive set? It has to be to sound that good with home recording.

yeah, its an expensive set, its a pearl Sessions maple.

And for the last time, I am on time, i know i get off a little in the begging for a second, i jsut rushed that part, but other than that no i am not, i played right to the song, and if you play the drums along with the song it matches up fine, so please no more telling me to play with a click.

If you guys want me to play some good drums i will play some good drums, I am just playing alot to a song right here.

thanks
-Joe
