Hi! I'm creating my own websites with DAW and plugin overviews. I am amatour producer :P Not even a producer. Just music amatour.

I don't know how to name my categories from plugin section. Now my website has categories:

  • "VST/VSTi"
  • "RTAS"
  • "AU"
  • "DAWs"

but don't you think that just
  • "Plugins" and
  • "DAWs"

is a better choice?

Sorry for my English :c
Greetings and have a nice day!

Hi there,
Personally I'd categorise them by type, such as dynamic processors, reverbs, eqs, etc.
Maybe you could have each category show in a list view with name, brief description, and a compatibility grid?
That way you can glance across compressors, for example, and see which ones are in your preferred format.

In addition, I'd put a search filter in place for mac or PC.
If you filter by mac only you still get all the categories above, but only with AAX/RTAS, or whatever.

It's personal opinion. I imagine the next guy will disagree.

A good thing might be to visit the sites of cross platform manufacturers to see how they do it.
That's their business!

You could use broad categories and subs as well. Say VSTis as the broad, and Synths, Drums, Amp/Cab sims, Other as your subs. VSTs as a broad, Dynamic, Timbrel and Spatial as your subs. Etc...
DAWs are a different story. There are so many being used these days that to lump them all together will only frustrate, but to try to list them all is almost impossible. Possibly take the top 20 or so and give them their own forum each and then put down the infamous "other". And don't forget audio editing software and sound libraries...

Thanks for your replies!
So, how should category structure look like for Nexus 2 plugin? (in your opinion)
I gave your this example because I don't even know if Nexus 2 is a compressor, eq, or anything else.

Well, to Timbral (EQ), Spatial (Reverb), and Dynamic (Comp) you could add an Other/Combination category. It could also include auto faders/pans, etc...

Structure something like this:
Forums
1..........VST
a) Dynamic
b) Spatial
c) Timbral
d) Combination/Other
2.........VSTi
a) Synth
b) Drum
c) Amp/Cab Sim
d) Other
3........DAW
a) Ableton
b) Audacity
c) Cakewalk
d) ProTools
e) Reaper
f) Reason
q) etc.
t) etc.
z) Other
4.......Misc
a) Drum Loops
b) Guitar Loops
c) Orchestral Loops
d) Misc Loops
e) Sound Samples
f) Audio Editing

You might have to separate out midi loops vs audio loops; Samples vs multi-samples (multiple mikes) vs hyper-samples (multiple mikes AND instruments); etc. etc. etc. It's your board. Take some time to plan it out and get a good feel for it. If you clump too much together, you can re-divide later. Have fun!
