Crazy 8......Track

I have a tascam 488 8 track and recently it started playing at double speed. It only has a variable speed control knob that is +/- 12 % but this thing is running fast. It already ran at twice the standard tape playing speed and there is no switch to set that. just the variable knob. Does anyone know what might be wrong and how to fix it. Iwas almost finished with a song on it too. I really can't afford a new one so maybe if someone knows of a common problem that radio shack might help with you'd be a savior.
