Ok. I've done an Iron Maiden cover called "Remember Tomorrow". For the first time, I did the vocals, so be sure to point out everything wrong about them. Performance-wise and mixing wise. And be brutal. Should I continue singing, or should I not waste precious air by singing :D ? And also, I'd like some comments, suggestions about the songs general mixing. Anyway, here's the link:

cranky I don't think you have to stop singing to waste air nice crack on your self though, if that was your first attempt I would say you get an A for effort maiden is not the easiest thing to sing you may want to try something a little easier as for the mix I thought the guitar was a little buried at the begining otherwise I would say good job I've heard worse things on the net

Cranky;

Nothin wrong with your voice but I'll tell ya the same thing I tell Jeff, Belt it out more, man. You sound pretty good on the turn arounds but you are trying too hard to "sing" in the softer parts.

As far as the recording itself goes, the turn arounds sound great but the main melodies are just a little too low in comparison. IMHO

Good axe work, Bro!

The vocals were certainly not terrible. I'm familiar with the song - not my genre. But the song you picked was not the easiest to sing. When you were required to hold the long notes at the end of phrases, I noticed a few "bobbles". I think that by practicing that over and over again you can certainly improve.

Real good playing elsewhere. I thought some of the guitars could be brought up a bit.

hmmm.. I'm a bit confused :D

What do you mean by that "sing"-thing. Should I try to not make it sound too much like choir-boy stuff, or do you just mean, I don't sound relaxed enough?

yeah!!!

i've never been a maiden fan, but the song sounded good, i really like the bass sound!!

but i digress, i listened to "whistlers revenge" and DAMN that kicked ass!! i loved everything about it. i really want to crank that one on the stereo!!

pardon my virgin ears, but are those real drums or an elctronic kit?? because they just sound awesome!!!!! how are you getting that sound??

now i need to go and listen to the other one.

peace

The bass is midi. I guess I managed to fool somebody :D (j/k)

It's a midi soundfont. I sequenced it with Cakewalk Sonar. So they aren't real drums.

you defintely have me fooled, :( man i have along long long way to go.

either way, it still rocks!!!!!!!!!!!

It means that you are trying too hard and stressing yourself. Relax and let it go, Bro.

Blessings!

Thanks for the tips and comments y'all. I'll have to keep that relax thing in mind. Maybe I'll re-record the vocals. I hope I still have the inspiration do so, when I can. I can't sing until Tuesday, since the house is full until then. I don't really have a 'studio', cause I record in my brother's room, where my computer is. I have to wait until everybody goes to work. It's a good thing my brother has a summer job so I can yell and scream as loud as I want during the days.

Yeah Cranky, sounds like yer forcing the voice, relax it a bit, let the amp do the work for you.

(I sing in a tiny basement room with people upstairs, so rarely raise my voice, no louder than talking level...)

WARNING: YOU ARE DEALING WITH SOMEONE WHO KNOWS THIS SONG VERY, VERY WELL..

It's nice to hear you singing and it's pretty good for the most part.. I dont know why I expected you to sound more like 'Mustaine' for some reason..:D

Great job for the most part..

You should have used real bass for the parts that are just bass and then used fake bass during the parts where it can be hidden with the guitar.. I knew it was synth bass when I heard the first note... I dont like the bass at all.. When you say the 'white lies' line I can hear your finnish accent! :D I know it from my friends wife who I told you already was from Finland.. Nice job with the fast parts.. I know this song really well because I used to play it when I was the drummer for this band.. good cover choice. I think we are going to have to collaborate on a cover.. Your singing is there and just needs to be tweaked.. You have a voice though bro.. Welcome to the world of the uncertain vocalist! :D  I think you should certainly keep singing.. Maybe write something to one of your tunes because it would probably be a lot easier.. Keep singing though.. I wouldnt tell you that if I didnt think you should.. (yeah I noticed the guitar clam around 2:30 before the faster part..:D) most people probably wouldnt, although I havent read the other replys yet. When I say I know this song well, I mean I have heard it soo many times that I can pickout every little nuance.. You did a really good job with this for the most part.. I think just doing some more takes on the vocals will nail this because your pretty close already..

great job and excellent choice!

Mettttaaaaaaaaaaaaal!!!
Cool stuff Cranky. I like the drum sounds too, very live, very cool. Im not familiar with this song, Im thinking it must be something newer... (Piece of mind was the end of my Maiden era... looks like i may have missed out)...what album is this off of. I like the guitars as well, nice stuff. Would have been nice to hear a little clanky Steve Harris in there but I got the jist..... Im off to wipe a little dust off of number of the beast:D cool stuff G

Quite contrary, my friend. It's straight from their debut album, called Iron Maiden. I think it's from 1980. It's one of the two first albums when Paul Di'Anno did vocals. And I must say he did pretty good.

Maybe you knew he has some finnish blood in his veins, so you might have subconciously thought all finns sound alike :D

Yeah. Some people don't seem to notice it as easily. I would use real bass all the time if I had one, believe me. I may buy one when I get enough cash. I actually tried all sorts of things to make it sound more real, but I guess it didn't really work, eh?

:D I just knew that accent must pop up there somewhere. I usually can tell when my english sounds too finnished :D , but the hard part for me is to figure out how to conceal it.

I think we are going to have to collaborate on a cover..

You know, Remember Tomorrow was one of two choices for me to publish. I've sung the vocals for "Strange World" too. I'm just having some problems with the clean guitar parts (not surprising). I've always loved the simplicity of that song, so I've wanted to cover that for a long time too. The solos are pretty easy on that too. Maybe I'll do that one next, and just maybe I'll do something a little more adventurous with it.

Thanks. I just noticed that I love to sing. I just don't have much privacy to do so, since I record in my brother's room. It's a good thing he has a summer job, so I can yell all day.

Wow, I didn't even notice that clam before you said it :D The backing track to the solo is pretty half-assed. I played it on first take and didn't want to over-analyse it.

I bet you didn't hear my screaming at 3:38, did you? :D

Wow, I've never quoted so much separately.

That was great! No criticizm here!

The ultra-wet vocals bothered me at first, but did not seem to be a problem, once the main part of the song kicked in.

Nice, heavy guitar work.

I never listened to Maiden, but this cover's great. Didn't the original vocalist have a much higher, screechier voice?;)

Guernica, the album after Piece of Mind is 'Powerslave.' It may just be the best Maiden album alongside 'Piece' imop... Please check it out immediately.. :D Some great bass playing.

Cranky, I like to be as critical as possible with your tunes because of the classic verbal slayings I have taken from you in the past.:D You have noticed things that I didnt notice before so that's why I pointed out the little things that the average human wouldnt even notice.. Once again, great job with this. It sounds way better then when my band used to play it.. The screams at 3:38 were too low ;) I like those very low leads in the backround about 4:30 ish.. They were so low you had to listen to hear them.. I didnt notice until after i listened a few times..

cool..

Not familiar with the tune but, I dug your playing. Your captured the gits nicely.

No reason you shouldn't continue to croon:)

Solid tune.

Peace,

Theron.

Some vocal advice:

Relax!

But don't lose the "attitude". ;)

It's interesting that Sam would mention Mustaine because that's the thing that makes him so cool as a vocalist. Paul Di'anno had lot's of that and that's one of the things that made early Maiden cool as well.

It's tough to capture when your working with canned rythym tracks because you don't have that live energy to feed off. Don't give up though. Feel and conviction win out almost every time over technique and chops IMHO.

Rock on!

I agree with Sam, If you dont own Powerslave go out and get it NOW!!! This is from the first Maiden album if I am not mistaken. I always dug them but I really like Bruce better than Paul D'anno. I am wanting to cover Sanctuary which was on the first album. Anyway, I need to hear more power in the drums they are somewhat buried. I love the guitar playing you got that down and the vocals, hey I dont think any of us here are really secure in our vocal abilities. No wait, that pootietang guy is, but he is the only one.

It Rocks!!!

Maybe they were too low. I really wanted to bury some stuff there that was almost subconcious when you hear it. And besides, the screams at 3:38 sounded funny when they were louder. Oh, you noticed the way distant guitar thing there also, eh? Again, I liked to put some extra stuff there, because the track had lots of space to put some little tricks there, glad you liked.
