Crackling noise in mbox

Hi, I've just got my mbox and I realise that even without launchiing protools LE v6.4, there is an inherent crackling noise (monitoring through headphones, Sony MDR 7506). There are no other programs opened and I'm running on an XP solely dedicated for audio programs. There is more nosie as I open protools and the launch is processed.

When i listen through the same headphones plugged into my computer speakers, there is no noise. So I highly doubt its a problem with the headphones.

Does anyone know what the problem may be? I hope its not a hardware problem..

Thanks!

Ah ... the joys of USB
Have you checked the compatibility info for the Mbox.
You may also want to try and lower the PCI latency of your video card.
Also make sure you have all of the latest drivers, updates and service packs. If you are running XP, make sure you at least have SP1. I wouldn't worry so much about SP2 as of yet.

yeah, check those things he recommended. hopefully your video card is AGP though and not PCI. You might try another USB cable too. And DON'T get SP2 yet. Digidesign says people are reporting problems in conjunction with it. So it's safer to wait until they have an update for it or something.

thanks for the replies and the tip to check out the usb!
pulled out my usb hardwares one by one to test which caused the problem and deduce if it was the mbox's cable that was the problem.

turned out that it was the modem that was responsible for the noise all along. Unplugging it solved the problem (seemed that disabling the modem wasn't sufficient) :D

I see you've finally taken the leap from Korg D16 land to Protools Jessper! Let us know how it works out for you ...

yep, that'll do it. another reason why people don't like to use their DAWs as internet computers. although...are you talking 56K modem???

would love to have another computer really but haven't got the $$ haha, working towards it. in the meanwhile, looks like I gotta be pulling the modem cable in and out quite a bit :p

anyway, its an adsl broadband modem :o
