So, I'm using pro tools 9 with a lynx interface. I'm getting a strange crackle when the guitar player is playing at louder volumes. No peaking from pro tools or the pre-amp. Tried multiple pre-amps, multiple amps, multiple guitars, cables, channels on the snake, and no other instruments are making this happen just the guitar. It's on a clean setting on the amps.
Any ideas?
thanks,
Alex

Is it possible you're distorting the mic? Or that the distortion is coming out of the amp itself?

What interface/soundcard are you using? I don't know anything about the lynx interfaces, but maybe you're overdriving the inputs?

The signal goes mic->preamp->interface. PT9 could be reading things within its limits, the preamp could be within its limits, but the interface's input could be getting hit too hard. Maybe try turning the preamp down and coming and see what it does.

Or second thought, turn down your input gain and see what happens. It sounds like some sort of gain staging issue, so you'll have to mess with the preamp gain, input gain, and possible how the I/O on PT9 is set up...i'm not familiar with PT9 so I can' give any tips there.

Both good ideas, I'll give it a try tomorrow and let you know how it goes.
The Lynx interface does have a little LED meter on each of the inputs which I don't think was peaking, but I'll make sure.
Many thanks!

DO you have and are you using the Soft Clip feature on Pro Tools? Not sure if the Lynx has this feature but I've used it before and crackling happens before red lights come one.

I'd first check by turning things down starting with the source and seeing when the problem stops. Make sure the amps not making the noise, but if it persists check it's not your monitoring channel. Turn the volume of the monitors down and see if it stays. I had a speaker that buzzed only at certain frequencies on a double bass. very annoying.

Almix12: Just to throw another suggestion in the ring, try making sure the vol pot on the guitar is not dirty. If the guitar player is turning it up at higher volume and you're hearing a crackle, sometimes a dirty pot could be behind the cause. If that's the cause a little WD-40 will solve that problem.
