Using ProTools 8 with a mBox mini, experiencing cpu whine through monitors whenever PT is up and running ............ is there a cure for this problem.

Move the monitors as far away from the computer as possible. Try a power conditioner if that doesn't help.

Do you have any tracks armed/mics on in the space while you're monitoring? Could be a feedback loop too.

Are you running TRS cables from the monitor output on unit to your speakers? My whine went away when I switched to balanced cables. :)

CPUs don't whine. Check your power supply. Also, use a different plug for the mbox and see if that makes a difference.

Sounds like it might be a problem with your power supply, you might need to drop the Earth on something to break a ground loop. Computers are generally not built with pro audio in mind, therefore problems can arise when connecting them to pro audio equipment. A potential difference is sometimes created between two connected devices - the computer usually being one, this can create interferance or audible noise.

If you're not sure how to do this consult someone who is qualified - might not be the problem anyway.

Let me guess. Powered speakers with three prong power cords? The problem is that your computer's digital ground is crap. All the digital noise passes through the shield of the USB cable, down the shield on your audio cables, and into the speakers because the speakers have a much better ground. However, when the noise passes through the audio cable shields, some of that noise bleeds into the audio.

There are two ways to cure this:

1. Ground your audio interface better.
2. Use balanced audio cables between the interface and speakers with the grounds lifted on one end.

I suggest #1; with some microphones, you might get noise on your inputs as well, and #2 won't solve that problem, but #1 should. That said, you could do #2 and attempt #1 later if you run into that problem.
