I have an AMD Athlon 2000+

I noticed it was running at 70 degrees celcius. I havn't noticed any performance issues...i just thought that was a little warm.

Could I risk damaging the cpu at this temp?

Thanks,
Scott

70C is a bit on the hot side and will shorten its lifespan.

Makes me wonder why it's running that hot. I'd take a look at the heatsink / fan, you may need to replace it. Typically they run in the 40 - 50C range. (mine runs at 53C).

I just noticed that the CPU fan is blowing air into the CPU.

Does this make sense? It is the fan that came w/ the processor and heatsink and I did nothing but install it how the directions said.

Is this normal?

your chip is about to burn out..i think athlon xp's have a cut at 72c
my athlonXp 2000 is at 44c.. it never goes over that...

If it's the retail version (is it?) of the AMD it probably blows in. Some blow in, some out depends on the heatsink design. Unless you unscrewed the fan and flipped it over, don't sweat it.

I've found software and BIOS temperature readings not very accurate. I wish they never invented that crap. It's possible there is nothing wrong at all. If it's operating fine, you're not locking up or randomly rebooting, let it be.

I doubt your chip is about to burn out. They are rated up to 90C max. If anything, it means your chip will last 40 years instead of 80. Get a technician to check it out if you're concerned.

Thanks for your input...

I cleaned out some of the dust in the heatsink and it is running around 60 degrees celcius now.

Thanks,
Scott

70C is hot, I wouldn't be comfortable with that. 50C is a more reasonable target.

The CPU fan *should* be blowing onto the heatsink, it reduces the chance of hot air pockets.

How is the airflow in your case? I would recommend at least one intake fan in the front bottom and an exhaust fan in the upper rear (often a good powersupply is sufficient). Two exhaust fans can work just fine too though. Try to keep your cabling tidy so as not to restrict airflow.

Like Emeric said, the onboard monitoring sensors aren't that accurate, and the issue can be furthur confused by monitoring software not interpreting it correctly. Try just turning your PC on and going right to the BIOS, and watch the temperature from there for a good 5 minutes or so. While the machine will obviously run much cooler when just idling in the bios, you can get some idea of whether the software is goofy or not.

If you're not experiencing lockups or strange crashes (explorer crashing especially), then you're probably alright......but 70C is really pretty dang hot man. I usually set my alarms at 70.

I put many 2000XP processors into my client's machines. None are overclocked.

I use the Alpha PAL8045 massive heatsink with a Panaflo H1A silent running fan. I get 13C temp deltas between ambient and the processor. Be sure to use Arctic Silver heat transfer paste. If you apply too little, the temps will go way up.

I consider 70C completely unacceptable. This is tremendously hot, due to no paste, cheap heat-sink-fan, etc. The case must be correctly ventilated also. As of this writing, I'm running 26C ambient and 39C processor temps.

get a large copper heat sink and vent your system, i have 8 systems running over 2000mhz some overclocked and the highest temp i get is 38c idle 44c under game load...

or look into vcool till you get a sink, i run it on my hotter boards, gets 10-15c lower temps... do a google for it...

70c is indeed very hot...i think my default alarm was set to that.

I'm running an Athlon XP 2100+ with a $7 speeze heatsink/fan (newegg)...and some Arctic Silver 3 and idling at 34c...max around 44.

a bigger heatsink helps. Could it be that there's no thermal compound between the cpu and sink?

forgot to mention i'm also overclocked to 2000mhz from around 1.73... so i would not think your chip to produce nearly that much heat if properly cooled

yeah, 3 of my systems are 1.47 athlon XP 1700+ cpu's that clock over 2gig at 38c idle :) gotta luv AMD...

It's an Athlon xp 2000+ on an Epox EP-8K3AE motherboard. I am using the heatsink and fan that came with the processor. When I installed it, it never said to put thermal grease on it. It did have some heat transfer strip on it and the instructions that came with it just said to remove the strip of tape covering the thermal strip.

Should I invest in a new heatsink and fan? What are some of your reccomendations? Are there any realatively quiet ones for under 30 bucks or so?

Thanks,
Scott
