I am using 2 Seagate S-ATA hard drives for Cubase SX2. Now I get too many CPU spikes. Does anyone know how to stop this from happening?

What's your computer configuration?
What mobo?
What chipset?
What type of SATA controller are you using? Is it a PCI card?

Need a wee bit more info.

Are you using the SATA controllers via the ICH5R South Bridge or the Promise controller?
If you are using the Promise controller, I would suspect that as your problem and you need to switch over to the South Bridge's controllers.
I don't have that mobo (I use an Abit IC7G) so you'll have to look at the documentation to determine which SATA connector is for which controller.
If I had to guess, I'd say they are the ones next to the battery.

Here is more info:
IRQ 0 System timer OK
IRQ 1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard OK
IRQ 3 Communications Port (COM2) OK
IRQ 4 Communications Port (COM1) OK
IRQ 5 LynxTWO OK
IRQ 6 Standard floppy disk controller OK
IRQ 8 System CMOS/real time clock OK
IRQ 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System OK
IRQ 11 Intel(R) 82801EB SMBus Controller - 24D3 OK
IRQ 12 Microsoft PS/2 Mouse OK
IRQ 13 Numeric data processor OK
IRQ 14 Primary IDE Channel OK
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE Channel OK
IRQ 16 RADEON 9600 SERIES OK
IRQ 16 Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D2 OK
IRQ 16 Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24DE OK
IRQ 18 Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D7 OK
IRQ 18 Intel(R) 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers OK
IRQ 19 Intel(R) 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller - 24D4 OK
IRQ 20 LynxTWO OK
IRQ 21 D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G DWL-G520 Adapter OK
IRQ 23 Intel(R) 82801EB USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 24DD OK
IRQ 23 Universal Audio UAD-1 DSP card OK

Under Device Manager, the IDE ATA/ATAPI controler states a ultra ATA Storage
Controler. I doesn't say Serial. Maybe this is the problem. S-ATA in the BIOS says DMA6. not DMA5.

Please help

I am using the one next to the battery. The RAID is the other one.

if you have any network cards in your pci slots....
disable prior to a recording session. see if that fixes it.

Well, I'm a little stumped.
About all I can think would be to look into the PCI latency setting.
You can look here for some more info on it.
It may not be an issue with the SATA unless you've been running this same setup prior, only with IDE drives.

Yeah you can try manning's suggestion and disable the D-Link.

I disabled d-link. The problem is still there.

What service pack do you guys use? I am using SP1. Maybe that I need to update.

Any suggestion?

SP1 here and not looking to go to SP2 any time in the near future.

For shits and grins, pull out the UAD-1 for the moment. If problems go away, you really need to look into your PCI latency and all of your buffer settings.
Possibly even trying some of the other PCI slots for the UAD-1 and Lynx cards.

Ok I try this out!

Good luck with it.
I'd love to stick around and help anymore if I could, but gotta go make some money to pay the bills.
It'll get sorted, may take a bit of time and tinkering but you'll get there.

al. the way to troubleshoot this is to disable all pci cards.
and just the lynx by itself running the pci bus. (DONT disable a video card tho'). if everything is fine with the lynx solo, then reintroduce other pci cards till you get a problem.
(one ast a time). you will then easily see the problem card.
if even with the lynx by itself you get probs, then i would look at the drives next. peace. you sure you have latest lynx drivers also ??

Ok,
I disabled everything(even the Lynx) and the problem still exist: just no sound now. CPU Spikes is carzy.

Well...I quest that I should put the S-ATA on the Promise Controller to see what's-up. There is no S-ATA controller in the Device Manager; it states Ultra ATA; DMa is enable though.

Dang....why me.

Ultra ATA is S-ATA. IDE/ATA is P-ATA.
Before you lose all of your hair over you computers components, you may want to look into the software.
Launch the task manager (Ctrl/Alt/Delete), look at the Processes and see if you can determine if any particular process is sucking up CPU usage other than Cubase.
Not sure of what all USB devices you are using, but the only other thing that strikes me is that one of the USB controllers is sharing an IRQ with the Ultra ATA controller.
I just find it odd that the SATA drives would be causing the CPU spikes seeing as how they are DMA.

I had taken all PCI cards out and left one sound card. The problem still exists. There are no conflicts with the audio card.

A sales person at a computer store told me that too many people have this problem with the program called "Cubase SX" on the PC. He said there is a compatibility problem with the Cubase program and the S-ATA technology. All that he knows is from a computer tech point of view that too many people is having this problem from the Cubase program.

Problem Solved

I have 2 S-ATA hard disks. I put Cubase on disk 1 and the audio on disk 2. Guest what? The problem solved. Can you believe this? The audio can't be on the same drive with the application: ......dang!!!!

What the heck is going-on with this DAW world. Well...this is some weird stuff and I wonder why it has to be this way with me.
