Never had this prob before, but now all of a sudden my CPU% bar is maxing out. im running win2k. sonar 2.2. 1.5ghz cpu, 512megz of ram, no probs, now all of a sudden my cpu bar graph is getting dangerously close to redlining, and when it does, my sonar freeezez, anyone have any remedies?

and...I think its from applying effects, but liek i said, my cpu was able to handle it all before, and i changed nothing
please help

thanx

So, it worked before perfectly and nothing has changed and now it isn't working.

Cool - you gotta to hate those problems.....

Are you sure that nothing has changed. Seems to me that even adding another track, another edit, enabling another send, even tweaking some FX parameter can tip it over the balance.

Turn your latency down if you are just mixing and turn it back up when you need low latency to use things like soft-synths during recording.

Do a search of the forum for "latency" and you should get some good tips for running the leanest, meanest configuration you can squeeze out.

Ciao,

Q.

FWIW - P4 1.8G 1g RAM - Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96 in ASIO mode gives me better latency, their "WDM" mode gives better stability when mixing with lots of effects. Latency = 8msec and I can work with about 40 tracks with most using FX and the builtin EQ of Sonar 3.0. Any more tracks and I need to start turning the latency down or it dropouts out, stutters or distorts.

Have you installed any Windows Updates lately?

Some Updates really screwes up your computer... :(

Yesterday I had a huge problem with some Updates. Went away when I removed it (the problem-maker).

Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, and scroll down to the bottom. They should be there... :)

wont screw up other things on my puter? not sure about the win updates, and what they all do

You get a warning that says something like "these and these programs are installed after you installed the update. If you remove them they might not work".

All my programs work after removing updates...

No guarantees, though. ;)

REWIRE DEVICE

Cakewalk has a problem with running certain rewire devices. I checked out Project Five in SOnar 2 & 3 and it is just a killer on the CPU. I heard they would tighten up on the ReWire devices but who knows?

Why would you apply windows updates to a stable DAW?
Because the computer is used to other things than recording music.

WINDOW UPDATES

I read that if it ain't broke then don't fix it. It seems like alot of computer music people who update windows experience problems. So DON'T BOTHER

Hmmm... that's just what the creators of the Blaster virus thought...

I'm NOT reformating my harddrive just because some idiot thought it might be fun to make a "Windows bug".

Set up your operating system on your primary partition - 2 - 5G.

Have your data on the other partition and your audio data on another, faster, hard drive.

Use a drive image program like Symantec Ghost to take a bit for bit backup of your operating system drive. Copy it to your spare partition.

That way you can roll back when you need to quickly and easily.

If your computer is on the internet and you are not updating that leaking, security nightmare called Windows then you are taking a risk. If your computer is on the internet with a broadband connection and you aren't updating you deserve to get gang-raped by Bill Gates and the rest of the MS board.

I get two or three attempted intrusion attempts per day. If I still haven't convinced you, go check out the thread detailing the grief Tombuur had trying to track down a worm on his system!

I'm using a network router with a firewall. I've run software to attempt and simulate intrusions. No one sees my computers... just the router.
