CPU fan/heatsink

Now I can begin assembling.....


I found a CPU heatsink/fan with the clips on it and it fits the socket fine.....

....however, when the mobo is in the case the h/s will hit against the drive bay plate.

Can I use some sort of adhesive to attach and slightly offset the h/s so as not to hit the drive bay plate???????.

I thought a read about adhearing the fan somewhere.

You "found" a HS/F??? Just layin' around..?? just because the clips fit don't mean jack dookey.. :p You gotta make sure that the HS/F is sufficient to cool your CPU. What type of CPU do you have and what type of HS/F is it?? That info is very important.

:eek: NO!!! :eek: The HS must be centered directly over the CPU's core and must be seated firmly.. It also can't be touching the CPU socket.. so you can't go shifting it around here and there to adjust for space. (unfortunately)

What kind of case do you have..? I'm curious how you get the HS running into the drive bay.

Well.....uhmmmm........

I have an ATX case and an older mobo.

Its a JetWay 530BF w/SiS chips.

By "find" I mean that a saw a used heatsink/fan for $2 at my local computer parts store and thought "maybe this will work. I've heard these are a good idea."

So I asked the store guy and he said it shoud fit the board and CPU, which is an AMD k6-2 550mH.

So now that my RAM is somewhere over New Jersey on its way to me from Crucial, I am jonesing to put it together.
So last night after cleaning the case and box I put the mobo(still in the statc proof plastic) into the case to get a visual idea of its orientation with relation to the slots.............

......which brings us to the original not-very-detailed-post.

The socket is located in the upper right-hand quadrant of the board as it would be sitting in the case.

The case itself has bays for 2 hard drives, 2 floppys, and two CD drives.

The hard disk bays are on the bottom and it's actually one large bay, 2 hard drives tall, so to speak. There is a plate for the bottom and two sides of this section and of course the ends and top are open.

With the h/s clipped into place on the socket (without the chip actually in there yet, of couse), and with the board lined up with the mounting holes, the h/s lightly touches the the botton plate of the disk bay.

I appreciate the response and help.

As you can see I'm not very experienced with the inside of a computer, at least not intimately.

Sorry, forgot to answer your 1st question.

The heat sink/fan is a Pentalpha brand.

It's pretty tall, like maybe an inch and a half to two inches.

It appears to be just a smidge bigger than the socket size and the shiney part on the bottom (which I assume is the part to be lined up/centered and touching the chip) looks like it is in the center of the socket.

I've had some problems with fitting some micro boards into full ATX towers, but that was with regards to IDE cables interfering with the drive bays.

I solved it by cutting the sheet metal of the drive bays. It was a bit messy, but it did the job. Since the screws for the drives are normally way inside the slots, cutting the metal should not pose difficulty in mounting drives. I had successfully mounted a CDROM in the cut slot with no problems, the offending area was in the overhang of the bay below the actual device bottom.
