Covers - What's the deal?

Right - here's the crack.

I've covered a song and want to place it on my site.

Anyone know if I can just do this without telling anyone or do I have to contact millions of people associated with the original artist/song to get permission?

You can cover a song in a club because the club owner pays the performing rights organizations money.

If you want to press a CD with a cover song, you either need to pay that song's publisher or go through Harry Fox to pay mechanical royalties.
