I decided to try something a little different so here's my cover of "Run" by Snow Patrol. The instruments cut off for a second at the end since my EastWest VST instruments are acting up.

I think I'm going to record this song for real. Any suggestions would be helpful!

I thought it sounded excellent.

Great job!!

Not really sure what I would tell you to add/change.

Jon, your voice gives me goose pimples every time I hear it.....:)

I think you should record this properly, with a bigger instrumental arrangement it would be beautiful.

Cheers
Joe

Thank you for your kind words, Joe! Your comments are always greatly appreciated! :D I agree with the suggestion, the instrumentation does sound a little plain on this one.

Here's a new version I recorded with a new instrumental arrangement:

Maybe I can get some feedback. I'm thinking of moving my studio set up to a larger room downstairs because the spare room I'm currently recording in doesn't have the best acoustics. This clip was recorded in that room. Do you think it's that much of a problem judging on the clip?

I like the new instrumental a lot more than the first one. I think the vocals are a little too overdone. I would say just relax a little and be a little more stylish with the vocals. It just sounds a little too concert choir style. I would try to relax and do it a little more casually. Just my opinion of course.

Well done!

You have a much more "ballsy" and "full" tone than the guy who originally sang it. He's pretty flat (not pitchwise flat, just stylistically "flat") and laid back, which sounds great in context but I think you have a much better voice than he does overall. In comparison your version sounds a tad "dramatic" and classical as far as the singing goes (I think it's a good thing). Your vibrato is much more intense compared to his which is almost non-existant. I wouldn't say one style is better or worse but they are strikingly different.

I like it a lot. Nice job.

Hey John Paul :)

The new instrumental arrangement is much better. Well done.

The one thing I noticed however, is that you have a slight sibilance issue on the vocals. Some of those "esses" are coming through quite harsh.

I'm liking the way you've sung it though. The original sounds like the singer's trying to make out with the mic or something.

Thanks a lot for the great comments doctorfungi! The harshness is probably from the turned up hi's. Can you fix this with a filter? If so, which one should I use?

Sounds great, good job.

Thanks Detroitroadrage!

Being compared to the original singer is a great complement. :D Thanks a lot Steve-0!!

Thanks for feedback James. Do you think the way I sang it in the first version was more stylish? I sang the earlier version in more of a light voice compared to the recent version with a little chest voice. Any tips on making it sound more "poppy". I might do a combination of both styles for the final version.

***So all in all, do you guys think that the room I recorded this is fine, acoustic-wise? I guess the EQ-ing took care of the problem?***

I kinda hate you, Jon! LOL. I think this is fantatic. You have one hell of a voice. God bless you, man.

Sounds wonderful with the instrumentation, Jon. :)
Your command of vibrato is marvelous! Don't change the style, this is you.......

Joe :):):):)

Wow, excellent. I'm not familiar with the original.

I'm on the fence with the siblance. It might be a bit much, but it definitely adds a dimension that goes well with this song. One of those broken rules that works!!

I'm a fan.
peace.

Just a slight decrease around the 8-11khz range (just guessing, sweep the EQ to find the exact spot) should do the trick.

You could try a de-esser instead, but just make sure you don't overdo it. You'll give yourself a lisp if you reduce it too much :p

Keep up the good work man. Very nice.

Thanks again doctorfungi! I'll see if my version of Cubase has a de-esser.

Thanks doulos, I'll have to look him up.

Thanks a lot Chili!! I'm glad you think the sibilance might fit in this context. Maybe I'll reduce is just a tad.

Thanks for the comment Joe!! :D I'll post the final version here when I get around to finishing it. I might tinker around with some drums and electric guitar in the latter part of the mix.
