It's been a VERY long time since I've posted anything in the mp3 clinic but I recenty finished up a four song demo (all covers) with a group called Lil' Brenda & The Midnight Walkers and I thought I'd see if I could get some comments from the fine folks here at HR on their cover of Hurt So Bad. Still makin' tweaks to the mix so any input is appreciated!

Hurt So Bad

....sounds like one fine mix ...the vocals are *sweet*.....something about the drums, though I don't trust my novice ears...

powerful!

Dude...turn the high hat WAAAAAAAY down. LOL. I literally had to leap for the volume knob.

Maybe it's just me, but that REALLY sticks out to me. I don't think it's a nitpick...it seems extremely loud to me, and it's making it tough to hear the rest of the mix.

BTW - Welcome back!

Okay...I downloaded it, just to make sure i wasn't getting a weird stream. It's official. All the brass is way too loud.

I think the rest of the mix is cool. She can sing her ass off. I think the guitars may be kinda' blurry, but again... the cymbals and ride and drums in general are kinda' overwhelming the mix, so I'm not sure.

Please don't think I'm an asshole for posting this. Hang around for awhile and you'll have 500 OTHER reasons to think I'm an asshole.

I gotta agree about that high hat. It's kind of hard to tell how well the other stuff is mixed because the high hat gets in the way.
The kick drum sounds a little too thundering. Maybe a little less reverb - or put on a gate if that's natural reverb. The snare can be a little much during the fills.

I still enjoyed it. Great performance, and a very ambitious tune to record and mix. I'd love to hear it after your tweaks.

holy high-hat!!!

dude, lower that thing before you poke somebodys eye out! I'd like to hear what's behind the high-hat..

a new VH-1 special, "Behind the high-hat."

loud too way is hat-high

LOL....well, I guess I should consider lowering the hi-hat:D

mcmd: Thanks for checkin' it out.....Brenda is a great singer!

chris: Regarding the hi-hat, I was actually trying to get a better snare sound and the hi-hat just came along with that. Unfortunately I was only able to put four mics on the drums....two overheads and one each on the snare and kick.....the one on the snare is catching the hi-hat too...I may try altering the eq on the overheads to try and minimize the brass. I think the blurriness on the guitars that you are referring to is from my trying to burn the mix as hot as possible. I was kinda pushing it here....I started out with the master at +2db and the leader of the band wanted more so I burned a mix at +3db....he was happy with that (he just happens to be the drummer too;) ) This mix I eq'd the low end to boost it & give it some more punch plus this one I burned at +3.2db. I may go back down with it though 'cause of the affect it's having on the gits....they're dirty but not THAT dirty:D Thanks for stopping by and having a listen (or two!).....and thanks for the welcome back!

fprod south:Glad you could have a listen....that was me tryin' to get more "thunder" out of things....I guess I may back things down a bit. Brenda is a very talented singer....her vocal performance was done in one take....start to finish....no editing.

B.SABBATH: "Behind the high-hat".....lol, that's a good one! Thanks for the comments. It may take some doing but I'm gonna see what I can do with the drums yet on this one!

love that voice......ABSOLUTLEY DESPISE THOSE CYMBALS.....yikes...the playing was really nice...the sound of them was like icy water ...being forced through my inner ear...lol.....great voice tho.and i really liked that guitar solo as well...i had never heard this before but i like the song...i didnt read the previous posts...so who played it originally??

jamal

Lil Brenda got some set of pipes. Loved her voice and energy.

The band though sounds like they are playing in the next room and I'm listening to them through a wall (except for them cymbals :) ). Not exactly sure what is up with the mix, but all the instruments sound muffled. Best description I can give you is it sounds like they're inside the club playing, and I'm standing outside having a smoke. The vocals, however, are clear.

You're gonna laugh, but when I saw this post I thought it was the old Little Anthony song. Was I surprised when I started playing it. :D

Hey Jamal & dachay2tnr......thanks for giving this a listen! It's pretty unanimous on the cymbals so I'm gonna be workin' on a new mix. I've since learned that the actual title is "It Hurt So Bad" by Susan Tedeschi. Thanks again to everyone for their comments!

Lesson 84 in OH placement. Away from the hi hat. :D :D

Otherwise good job. Appropriate guitar tone. Maybe a longer predelay on the vocal verb.

Version2

I must be hearing the remix cause I thought the cymbals were fine.
And the rest is simply awesome.powerful vocal performance

damn...and I wanted to hear the blistering HH solo!!..

nice vocals..

recording sounds like it was done in a gymnasium.

oops...I had a reverb send dialed up on the monitor board... oops.. I haven't a clue how the mix sound.. I think maybe the drums were muffled...??

Wow! you really captured those FANTASTIC vocals.Great Job! I guess you fixed the cymbals or they are out of my range! sounds good to me. the rhythm guitar sound is a little too distorted for my taste but it does go well and contrasts nicely with her voice. that was a fun listen.

Peace
Bill
