Hey guys, me and mate just knocked up a cover of Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol yesterday afternoon, just wanted some pointers after a rough mix. I'm quite aware of it being slightly too unbalanced to the right, but the problem is I can't locate what is causing the imbalance. Within Cubase I even put everything to the left and still the right was stronger!! Drums are EZDrummer with DKHS add-on (maybe this is causing the imbalance, I'm not sure but I can't get the drums to pan brilliantly so I just left them down the middle....).

Song can be found here

Criticism most welcome!

Cheers!

Hey I'll definetely be listening to this as soon as I'm home from college. I covered the recent Snow Patrol/Martha Wainright tune a few weeks back.

Theres potential. I didnt get up to the ez drums and i want to comment before them becuase I hate those kind of drums most of the time. I think the chorus on the guitar might be over the top and doesnt match the original exactly. There are some mistakes that jump out. The mix is pretty good you could have double tracked the guitar thougha nd hard paned idk what you did with em but it sounds mono.

thanks for having a listen, do you mean the crunchier guitars towards the end of the song could be doubled and panned or the main "theme" one that runs through most of it? what mistakes jump out in particular? perhaps i can fix them if i know where to look. really need to guys with experience to have a good listen for me!

Sounds good. I dont know the original. Seems a bit minimalist, perhaps you want it that way. The panning could be wider. Nice job, good vocals.

The timing of the guitar is a little off at the beginning.

Vocals lack confidence in the delivery and it seems like there is a noise gate or something, because the ends of several words are cut off.

Dude that was good man. I really enjoyed the heavier parts.

I think the vocals let it down just a bit..not in terms of pitch, just the way they've been recorded, there seems to a bit too much ambience. Maybe think about bringing the main guitar down a bit? I like when the drums kick in and the distorted guitar take sover, but again, the vocals seem to be too distant. This is fine for the backing singer, but I kinda expected the lead vocal to be a bit more..in your face...just my opinion.

I really like this song. Snow Patrol have some great songs.
Your voice is a bit similar, although there are a number of off notes sung.

Good stuff.

thanks for all your replies guys, i guess it's confirmed that I really need to get a decent mic! this was recorded with a £10 mic from argos (equivalent in standard to a radio-shack job for those in the US) and was just done in my bedroom which is kinda big and would probably give good reason to the "ambient" thing telepaul mentioned.

Ah yeah that's all it is then. Try singing into a wardrobe full of clothes, it cuts down on those reflections. But well done, we'll be seein more of ya here, yeah?

The ambient vox kinda works. If you could re-record with a bit less ambience it would work nice.

I think the two biggest killers of this track is the timing. I am not sure if its the guitar or if its the keys coming in off time. Either way. I also agree that the vocals need to be recorded/mixed better.. They sound good pitch wise and style wise so its in no way an insult to the vocalist.

Also, the opening guitar chorus needs to be backed off and the ending guitars seem a little lifeless. Definately need some doubling and panning to get that dynamic effect of when the song goes from mellow lonely guitar to heavy chugging guitars.

Just my 2 cents. Overall though it sounds very very good.
