Couple of questions about triggers live

I'm wanting to investigate adding a pad or two for live use to my brothers setup.

Heres what i think i know.

We need a pad or two depending on how many samples we want to simultaneously trigger (probs just one per song). They can be cheap as you like, because they wont be played as "drums" (he doesn't need it to feel like a snare drum for eg).

We need a brain to house the samples in + which gives an audio live out for the sound engineer.

Can anyone advise on any misunderstandings i'm making + maybe point me in the right direction in terms of hardware?

What kind of samples do you want to trigger? Your own or are you just looking for drum sounds. If you want to trigger your own samples you'll either need a sampler or a pc to be involved or a drum module that lets you load your own samples.

There are tons of trigger and module options. You can always mount triggers on acoustic drums. You could buy some of the alesis trigger pads http://drums-percussion.musiciansfr...is-DMPad-SingleZone-Percussion-Pad?sku=712767

Or something like this: http://drums-percussion.musiciansfr...IDI-Percussion-Pad-Controller?sku=449753#used

Or there is this which would handle everything at once. http://drums-percussion.musiciansfriend.com/product/Roland-SPDS-Sampling-Percussion-Pad?sku=449910

Our own samples, i'm wanting to avoid the pc route, looking for a cheap solution as we'll only be using 1 or 2 samples per song. Maybe an alt snare etc. I will look at your links thanks :)

Yes, it sounds like you are understanding it correctly.

The trigger (or drum pad) simply sends a signal that it has been hit and how hard. The signal goes to a nearby drum module which plays a sampled sound. The module has analog output jacks to be used with recorders or PA systems.

Any pad can be assigned any sound. Pads and modules are usually sold separately. Today's pads and triggers are interchangeable and work with almost all modules. Don't confuse edrum modules with tempo machines and samplers. They look similar.

You can either get triggers that attach directly onto your acoustic drum heads, or you can get add-on pads that are separate with their own stand.

These are the cheapest add-on pads on the planet. http://www.crappytriggers.com/

I am not sure, but I think this may be the cheapest drum module. http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=619

Hope this helps.
