This 2-port instrument/mic preamp/DI looks really good. The response curve is pretty even, very quiet, and it's like $79 street. I want to mix on my computer so all I need is a preamp and it looks really good. The thing is, I constantly seeing it recommended with reference to condenser mics - has anyone tried it with dynamics (like my SM57)? If it's bad for that setup, is there anything in a similar vein (under $150 let's say) that would be more appropriate?

It also seems like the DMP3 also by M-Audio is similar, but higher end - but in what way? They both seem nice and level, smooth, etc. - what's the difference?

For dynamics, I'd lean more toward the Studio Projects VTB1. It tends to put a better image in the monitors when dealing with an SM57. With condenser mics, the VTB1 and the Audio Buddy are in the same ballpark.

You might do a search on the DMP3 and SM57 here to see what it turns up.
