This is an old song I wanted to get down. It's still in (rough) status at the moment but, I would like to hear any suggestions.

Real drums are in order and I have left some pretty large open rythem spots to add some guitar work in (I am sure you will notice).

If you could give me some thoughts on general balance and guitar and bass tone I would appretiate it.

The song is "Another Day"

Thanks

Lyrics:

ANOTHER DAY
WRITTEN BY: DAVID EPPERLY, 1992
INCOMPLETE

WHISPER THE WORDS TO ME
THAT MAKE ME THINK OF SANCTITY
AND DREAMS THAT FELT SO REAL
BEFORE THE PROPHETS DIED

HELP ME MEASURE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN
WHAT I AM AND WHAT I’VE SEEN
CAUSE I DON’T WANT TO BE LIKE THEM
AND THEY DON’T WANT TO BE LIKE ME

THERE WILL COME ANOTHER DAY
THERE WILL COME ANOTHER DAY

SIMPLE WAS THE PASSING BETWEEN
A QUIET VOICE TO A DEAFENING SCREAM
A CLENCHING GRIP TO FALLING FREE
WHEN YOU FIND THAT IT JUST CAN’T BE

IT’S HARDER TO PUT FAITH IN YOUR SELF
THAN IN THE LIES OF SOMEONE ELSE
WHEN THEY’RE SPENDING ALL THEIR DAYS
PAINTING PICTURES OF YOUR HELL

THERE WILL COME ANOTHER DAY
THERE WILL COME ANOTHER DAY

Oh man this song is weird but so chill and creative!! I dont have anything negative ...except the snare is a little bright and annoying at times..BUT...I am listening with my monitors up full blast...so that could be it... :)
This is a really cool piece...good luck!

Thanks, Still working on some guitar fills and maybe some string parts.
Ya I did not spend much time on the drums because they are destined to be replaced (soon I hope). Just threw a quick compressor on the main to bring up the volume some and it could have pumped up the snare a bit much too.

Edit: Ya that snare is a bit too out front;) Main vox are scratch at the moment, need to get back to them.

Thanks again. I'll post as I go along with updates.

Everything is as you describe it.
I think the two (?) acoustics are very thin & 1 dimensional. What did you record them with? there's not mid or bottom comng from them. This might be intentional and would make more sense with more guitar parts filling the spaces and the EQ band. Maybe a 12 string to fatten?
Redo the drums as you say and DON'T throw away the vocal, maybe retrack but keep these as they hold something that might be missed in a re recording.
Seems like a good song in the making. I'm always nervous about additional guitar parts in my own stuff as I tend to follow the riff or progression overly religiously. I look forward to hearing this develop.
Good work thus far.

Thanks Rayc, I used an at-3035 at the 12th fret. I did use a hi-pass and add a little sizzle on the guitar. I may have gone a bit too far, I was noticing it my self. It's 3 guit's, 1 up the middle and the others panned. I think I may try taking away the added sizzle on the guit's and maybe add a hair around 250hz if needed. Or maybe I will just try adding a little bottom on the guit's
The strings are only a day onld at recording, and very bright. I recorded with the same settings before but on much older strings;)

I have fixed the canned drums for now, but I am waiting for more progress to upload a new file.

Thanks for the comments.

a dissident opinion : i like the way those guitars sound! the gaps you left will fill out nicely with somewhat fatter, less clear guitar sounds to make for full overall guitar tones.
good singing and good balance in the mix. i think there are some frequenties booming in the bass guitar, is that an A you're playing? right there.

i enjoyed this, the laidback feel and vocals and sound make for something unique, hadn't heard this anywhere before really.

Thanks Faderbug,

Well Thanks for the take. I am up in the air on a few things . I will get a chance to mess with it today and put a new file up (I Hope).
And ya.... A, G, C, is the main bass line. Not having a booming problem on my system, but When I take it into the real world I will make sure and check it out.

Hey FS - unique rhythm on the guitar and drums happening here. Original and cool.... The vocals are spot on and the harmonies are soaring..... Not getting much boom on my earbuds so can't comment on that. The mix sounds pretty solid.

:) :D :) :D

Thanks Ido1957. The Drums will likely be a little more in synch with the song when recorded, but I like th eodd feel they have now.

I am a horrible harmanizer :D  :( When I find something that works I do back flips because alot of times I am just plain lost :o

The song originaly had no backups but this is one we will more than likely never play again so I am free to have fun with it ;)

Thanks again.

Cool song. I don't have much to add that hasn't been said already. I think the guitar lines are cool, but they don't have much prescence to them. I'd like to hear a fuller acoustic sound, but thats just personal taste. You have a cool voice and the song flows pretty well. I'd like to hear this again when its finished. Good job overall. :)

Thanks Greg_L I just got back from the store with an axiom 49 midi controller so I will have to mess with it first (don't know jack about midi) and then I will get back to this song.

Thanks again

You have got such a cool voice. Go ahead, sing Humpty Dumpty and make my ears happy. :D

I love the snare pop up front. It should hold it's own, when you start adding more guitars and stuff.

Bass is nice and full...a bit boomy, but I like it.

I like the vocals up front on this also.

Nice lilting ring to the guitars. Sounds like a 12 string at times.

I really like this one Freud. You could call it finished right now by me. ;)

Thanks True;) I could chop some sections out and be happy with it but I want to see what I can come up with for guitar parts. I am busy trying to learn this new fangled midi stuff at the moment  Very frustrating. I am going to try to record some guitar later if I can keep my eyes open:D You know, Christamas and all took it out of me.

Thanks again

Oh, I think adding some more guitar will be good. I just meant, that if you were to leave it, in it's simpler form, that it would still be a good song. But adding more guitar will definitely take it to another level. This is the type of song, one can do unplugged as well as powered up...and that is a good thing in my opinion. Looking forward to the additions. :)

I have the gear for midi and have still put it off for a year now. I don't know why. Every time I read in my Cubase manual, I come across the midi section and just keep on going, rather than test it out. Good luck with it.

OK. New file is up.

Let me know what you think

It's "Another Day"

True', I pulled my self away from the midi long enogh to get something done :D

Well Let me know what you think everyone. I know there is a guitar part thats mixed very low and I did that on purpose. I had to fight my self not to bring it up cause there's a whole part that gets buried in the vox. I sort of like it that way though. Wanted it to be distant.

Thanks All

I hope you can figure out the midi stuff. ;)

Ooh yeaaaah....this is coming along really well.

On the headphones, the snare sounds great, but on the open monitors it seems too low and not giving off that energy the way it was...But with that said...no nits whatsoever.....It just keeps getting better. :)

Yah, I got to make over your vox again too. So strong and forthcoming in your style...so awesome it tis....

I love the guitar addition too !!

Thanks for the comments true. I got a chance to listen to it in the car this morning. I have a few tweeks to make from that.

I replaced the snare and sort of mixed it for a compromise. With the compression it pop's pretty good in places and is a little mild in places too.

Have to do some level adjustments with the added guitar in the first chorus and a few other little tweeks.

I left the back up vocals down further in the first verse than in the latter. I think I may have lowered them a hair too far. I'm trying to get the effect of them without them becoming too obvious... Not sure if I want to tweek them or not.

Thanks Again
