and then there's:

- remaining completely silent...................while singing!

- not singing while singing when you're not singing but you are (get it?)

- or being on an old wooden ship and it flips over and one shark has one arm and another has another arm, and they pull and tug, and all of sudden there's a loud POP! and you wake up in a room with people you thought you knew but it turns out you didn't...

while singing!!!

There is also the loud POOPING! while singing!!!......

... in which case, an even louder organ accompaniment is the only rescue and ...

A full daiperason saves the performer's dignity

now you're getting silly

I rarely have problems with itchy throat/coughing while singing normally, but whenever I try to sing Dimmu Borgir (~once every 6 months), I'm gasping for breath after 5 minutes. I think my death grunt technique needs some work.

Hi cashcohen

Could you tell me what your signal chain is ... which mike, which compressor and its settings, and also our proximity to the mike. What you're working on is prime material for the notion of the 'sweet spot'.

Death metal achieves its 'thickess' utilising similar techiques to traditional throat singing.

however, instead of throat 'singing', it is going for something like throat 'talking' ...

the Vowels of the overtones which trad throat singing adresses, become part of the words grunted by the vocalist.

watch and listen to this: here is a key .... this guy I just found on a google search ....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7gj0b0WZ80&feature=related

Already, you will hear some of his characteristics in your death metal performance.

What he is doing is pulling apart some of the characteristics so they become achievable with minimal effort.

Again, note well: what he's getting that is different from the Dimmy Borgir vocalist is BECAUSE he's not going for the sense or feeling of talking he IS going for the feeling of 'singing'. As long as you make allowances for his fundamental difference in intent, then he it, IMO brilliantly teaching the rudiments and fundamentals involved in death metal style.... He IS a very flexible performer, and I'm dang pleased to see someone like him sharing his stuff.

Anyway, give this a try, and work out how to 'talk' it, and you will find the sweet spot which minimises the need to cough and will enable you to output for hours.

The crucial importance of the settings of your audio gear I will go into when you let me know what you're already using.

er ... and to put it differently ... the guy from Dimmu Borgir is centred in Yesod whilst powering from Netzach. This Youtube guy is obviously presenting the integration of Tiphareth with the analysis of Hod. I'd like to see him in performance, as well as in teaching, to see if he has traveled the Path of Temperance. I have forgotten the number on the tree, but you know thhe direction I am talking about.

OK. Later :)
