Probably nothing new, but for those who are not aware it exists.
I bought this external enclosure unit. It's just a box with an AC powersupply and some electronics which allow you to install any CD, CD-RW or Hard Drive and have an external USB 1.1/2.0 device.
I think it's great for backing up data. I put a 40GB Seagate in it and moved some audio projects over to it. I use it at work to grab backup data from machines that need to be worked on for whatever reason. You'd definetly want USB 2.0 for large data transfers. PCI cards are available in the $50 range if your motherboard isn't 2.0.
There is an advantage to buying one of these over an external CD-RW as well. If the CD-RW dies, you just buy another and pop it in the enclosure. $50 enclosure, $50 CD-RW (USD).
Good deal.
Here is a picture of it.
