So, I'm a Sports Radio nut... I'm guilty.
Anyway, our local sports radio station in Detroit, has this thing where they play songs by local artists about local sports teams. A lot of rappers send stuff in, and it's usually mediocre at best. Sometimes, a good one will come from a Pistons fan or something...
Anyway, yesterday they played a track from someone who calls himself "Big Daddy Slick" or something like that, and it was about the Detroit Tigers. It was literally, one of the worst songs I'd ever heard. I was so embarrassed for Hip-Hop/Sports fans. So the station asks people to call in and "Slam it or Jam it" so, I lob a call into the station. They put me on air, and I say just that... The song was horrible, and I couldn't believe they had the audacity to play it. They laughed and said, "Ok, so what makes you an authority on why it sucks?" And of course I responded with "I'm a local Hip-Hop artist, and I run and operate a recording studio."
To make this long story shorter... They ask me to stay on hold and then talk to me off the air.
First, they commissioned me to make an anthem track for the Detroit Tigers... First thing I say is, GIMMICK. I'm not really down with that... But they told me... Just be true to who you are as an artist, and do something you would like...
So I did, and it's actually quite dope.
Second, after they listened to the music at my website, they asked me to create a new Theme song for their radio show... Mind you, this is the most listened-to sports show in Detroit Sports radio. We're talking hundreds of thousands of listeners... They want me to create a new theme song, and they'll play it everyday at 3:00PM to start the show.
I'm torn... I dunno if this is a genuine opportunity, or something that would kill my credibility as an artist.
Any thoughts?
