Here's a mix of an instrumental tune I just did. I think it came out really nice. It's sort of jazzy, I guess, but hard to classify. It's called "Put It In H". Anybody get the reference?

I like the drum and bass interaction here. Good mix also. The playing is also good and creative. I don't listen to jazz at all, so I don't know if this is standard jazz, but I like this. Weird but nice. I especially like the awesome drum mixing here. So fat and smooth and yet so clear and live sounding. I think this needs a few listens to appreciate. I'm not sure of the reference, but "Pow R Toc H" comes first to mind, so maybe I'm right (or maybe not :) ).

I'll just say it here. It's a reference to the Simpsons. Homer has totaled his car and he's shopping for another one, so he goes to 'Crazy Vaclav's House of Automobiles'. A Slavic salesman is describing the features of a little tiny boxy car into which Homer is crammed. He says, "She'll go a hundred hectares on a single tank of kerosene".

Homer: "What country is this car from?" (there is a shot of Homer trying to decipher the foreign gear shift letters, one of which is H)

Vaclav: "It....no longer exists, but take it for a test drive, and you'll agree: 'Svotlav tesjny vulcjiv nyet!" (I don't know what he said, something Slavic-sounding)

Homer then tries to drive the car, with Vaclav pushing it onto the highway and hurriedly instructing, "Put it in H!"

Anyway...thanks for listening, and for the compliments, CrankyOne. No, it's not standard jazz at all, really.

It's a space jam! There's afew spots where' it's posatively Zappa-esqe. Sounds like minimal mic-ing on the drums. A very "live" sound. I dig it.

Yeah...I'm a little worried that I'm being too Zappa-esque on it, but what the hell. There are 5 mics on the drums: ECM8000s overhead, SM57 on snare, SM57 between rack toms, and a Sennheiser e602 on the kick. I punched up the low end on the toms with endorphin in the mixing stage. Thanks for the comments!

Very cool, I like it:)

Yup, I got the reference alright. It is in the Mr. Plow episode.

I prefer Plow King.

BTW, it is a little distorted on my system,(Tannoys, Alesis RA 100, Spirit Mixer). I dont know if it is on my end or yours, but I have downloaded lots of mp3's from here, and you are the first who had bad Distortion. Good tune though, does sound like Zappa.

Really? Distortion, eh? I don't hear it, but you could be right. Could you describe it a little more? Is it constant, only when certain things happen in the instrumentation, or whatever?

My setup, BTW is a pair of Tannoy Reveals with a so-so JVC consumer amp.

Yikes! I am not a tech guy, but:

It is " Clipping", I think that it the proper word. I am Running my Darla24 Outs to my mixer, then to the amp. Your tune is causing the LED meters on the mixer to go to the top of the red, and I hear distortion.
As I said, this is not my forte in life. I have played a dozen Mp3s since then , and I do not get this.

Actually I was wrong. I have the tune on now, and the meters are fine, sorry. It is the Bass. When you do the first lick, and the bass and drums hit the first real "Downbeat", it is very distorted. The whole thing is distorted whenever there is heavy Bass and drums. Very odd, it doesnt happen on the other stuff I play.

I have tried it ten times, bigtime distortion. I wish I could help you, I do not know enough about it. Great tune though, great job.

Mr Snorp, are you doing all the instruments or is this a band?

T-Rat: I'm a one man band on this track. As of late, I do have an actual band, but I can't be waiting for them to come over for me to record. I find it useful to record my songs so they can learn them better.

DavidK: Thanks for the specifics. I'll try this on as many systems as I can and try to get rid of the problem. Lord knows, you can't have distortion!

Whoop, I hope others chime in about this. Frankly, I think this may be a problem on my end. The Tannoys ( PB8 II I think) are showing their age, but I still have a good set of ears in this 37 year old body that is also showing it's age. I am getting older. Hold me:(
One man Band?? Very Cool, I might have to check this one out one last time, great job

I'm more impressed:D . C'mere Dave and give us a hug.

thanks for the dynamic range you left in the music. It takes a lot of confidence to do that.

Even though it does not have the larger than life sound, I am totally digging on the cohesiveness of the whole thing. It sounds like everything is playing in the same room.

funk on!

Well, everything was playing in the same room. Just at different times. ;)

And I refuse to join the loudness wars! Plus Wavehammer doesn't sound too good when you crank it anyway.

Thanks for checking it out!
