What do I do?? I installed Cool Edit Pro 2.1 and hooked up my keyboard thru the joystick port but no matter what device options I set, it won't record anything. When I hooked up the keyboard from its line out to the line in on my soundcard, it still won't record. I keep trying different device property settings, but nothing works. Any suggestions? The user manual doesn't help me.

I don't know anything about keyboards or midi, but I like the way you spell your username. There's an old song by a band that I like a lot that spells it the same way, and I stole that spelling when I named my daughter "Jaimee," none of which helps you at all...but we can't ALL be helpful, lol.

Good luck,
Chris

The line out > line in approach is the one to use. Make sure your soundcard's input is selected in Options > Device Properties, then set the windows or soundcard's inputs to record from 'line', and check the input is not muted and the fader is raised.

Thanks for the input (excuse the pun). It still won't work. I checked the windows soundcard controls, changed the device options on the MIDI In and the WAVE In in Cool Edit, and did anything else I could think of . All to no avail. I will have to record from my keyboard to the software provided with my keyboard and then open the saved file in Cool Edit, instead of directly recording into Cool Edit. Inconvenient at worst. Thanks again for your help.

Keyboard? You trying to record MIDI?

Yes. Actually, it's a digital piano midi'd into the joystick port of the computer. I use it with notation software (it prints the notes that I play) and I want to record directly from the piano to cool edit. But I can't get it to work. Even hooked up my stereo to the line input on the soundcard as a test and cool edit won't record that. I'm missing something somewhere.

Well, no you weren't helpful but thanks for the compliment!! You're daughter's name is pretty, too.

Did you check the Windows Mixer window? Sometimes inputs are muted there. Right click on the little speaker icon in the tool tray and open up the volume window. Click on Options/Properties and make sure all your devices show up as record or playback. In CEP/AA, go to Options/Device Order and make sure your input device is selected. While you are at it, go to Options/Device Properties/Wave In and see if "Try As WDM" is checked. If so, uncheck it for each input and see if that works. Conversely, if it is unchecked, try checking and try again. I found out my "WDM Driver" sound card would NOT record with that box checked, and until I unchecked it for each of 4 pairs of inputs it would only record on the first pair. Such is life with computers.

I get the feeling there could be some confusion here -

Cool Edit Pro / Audition does not record midi under any circumstances. You need to be recording from the line-in of your soundcard, connected to the line-out of the keyboard, selecting line-in on the windows mixer record side, and you'll be recording the audio sound of the keyboard, which you can then process and edit as required in the audio (not midi) domain.

And if you already had that clear - sorry!

Yeah, that's why I asked if Aimee was trying to record MIDI. Cool won't do that.
